Responsibilities of Daycare Assistant
- Observe and monitor children's play activities.
- Organize and participate in recreational activities, such as games.
- Organize and store toys and materials to ensure order in activity areas.
- Sterilize bottles and prepare formulas for infants.
- Dress children and change diapers.
- Help older children with homework and school work.
- Perform housekeeping duties related to daycare children such as soiled laundry, cleaning , dishwashing, and changing of children's linens
- Support children's emotional and social development, encouraging understanding of others and positive self-concepts.
- Sanitize toys and play equipment.
- Support children in making safe choices and recommend or initiate other measures to help support positive behavior, such as caring for own clothing and picking up toys and books.
- Identify signs of emotional or developmental problems in children and bring them to the daycare administrator's attention.
- Keep records on individual children, including daily observations and information about activities, meals served, and medications administered. Instruct children in health and personal habits such as eating, resting, and toilet habits.
- Assist in preparing food for children and serve meals and refreshments to children and regulate rest periods.
- Read to children, and teach them simple painting, drawing, handicrafts, and songs.
Ideal candidate would have the following skills.
- Communication skills – in order to effectively interact with both children, daycare administrator and parents, it’s crucial that Daycare Assistants have excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Multitasking – because daycares are often noisy and hectic environments, it’s important that Daycare Assistants multitask effectively and calmly.
- Organization skills – when preparing meals, assisting with art projects, or playing games, good organization skills help Daycare Assistants keep everything running smoothly. These skills can also help Daycare Assistants keep detailed records of the children’s activities
- Patience – since children can be loud, easily distracted, and reluctant to follow instructions, Daycare Assistants must have a high degree of patience and understanding
- Physical fitness – while it’s not necessary for Daycare Assistants to be unusually strong, it is important that they’re able to kneel down, pick up toys and other objects, carry infants and small children, and move around both indoors and outdoors
Experience Required/Preferred
- A minimum of 1 year of working with young children - infants and toddlers - required
- Early Childhood Development education - Preferred
- License/Certification:
- CPR Certification (Preferred)
- Child Development Associate Certification (Preferred)
