As the Data Scientist - Formula Optimization Specialist you will develop PPG's AI approach for accelerating the identification of new formulations that reduce material cost or enhance performance of PPG products with a focus to drive significant sales/profit growth for PPG.
You will set the technical approach for integrating chemistry/physics knowledge, formulation science, and machine learning methods to accelerate the search for optimally performing coatings. You will be viewed as the expert driving substantial ACT defined cost savings through chemistry knowledge and experience with Machine Learning applications for chemistry-based systems.
The role will report to the Data Science - Lead.
Key Responsibilities
• Own Formulation AI technical approach with responsibility for delivering substantial ACT defined cost savings.
• Work closely with teams in Digital / Architectural Coatings leaders and technical teams to liaison between labs and Digital teams. A minimum of 1 day a week in the chemistry labs and 2 days a week with Data Science team in the Pittsburgh Office or Coatings Innovation Center.
• Advise in the development and deployment of the roadmap for building and scaling the Formulation AI solution to other technologies, locations, and business units.
• Develop computational models for chemistry-informed formulation AI based on a Hierarchal Machine Learning (HML) algorithm with benefits to 1) enable models to cover a broader range of products 2) predict performance of ingredients not available in the initial model training data.
• Personally build and coach others to build machine learning models using AI/ML tools.
• Establish a methodology that integrates traditional analytical data, high-throughput experimentation, and calculated features that will allow broad adoption of formulation AI across a wide range of formulated products and technologies.
• Develop a roadmap for the implementation of formulation AI (the future of product development within PPG) in other business units and locations across PPG.
Qualifications
• 10+ years of proven results in leveraging machine learning methods in chemical systems and formulations
• Ph.D. in Chemistry
• 5+ years of experience with Python coding
• Can build relationships and influence a wide array of personality types from diverse backgrounds.
• Self-directed/motivated and drive for formula cost savings
• Time management/prioritization skills, strong oral and written presentation skills.
