JOB DESCRIPTION:

Hart Research, one of the nation’s leading public opinion research firms specializing in Democratic politics and causes, is currently seeking a motivated entry-level Data Associate to assist in evaluating research requirements to create sampling universes for polls that accurately reflect target populations. The Data department plays a vital role in Hart Research’s mission to produce accurate, strategic and impactful research. In this position, you will perform essential tasks and grow in your knowledge of data science and polling from a team of motivated, smart, curious and supportive professionals who have passion for cause-related research.

This is a temporary position for the 2024 election cycle with potential to extend to a permanent role in 2025.

ABOUT YOU:

If you have a passion for research and politics and have some combination of the following skills, we encourage you to apply!

Education/Experience:

  • 4-year degree in a related field or equivalent experience
  • Experience or coursework in statistics and/or survey methodology
  • Experience working with voter file data
  • Previous work experience with a polling or research firm or campaign data team preferred
  • Experience working with large datasets

Technological Skills:

  • Proficient with SQL and Python, particularly the data science stack (numpy, pandas, etc.)
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office, specifically Excel
  • Familiarity with git and github
  • Experience working with any or all: TargetSmart ListBuilder, Catalist Q Tool, VAN, R, GIS software, BigQuery

ABOUT THE JOB:

As a key functional member of the Data Department, the Data Associate will use unique project requirements to prepare samples for multiple modes of survey research. Duties include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Perform data management, processing and cleaning tasks.
  • Provide accurate demographic information to analysts to ensure that quotas and weights are effectively representative.
  • Create universes for polls that will accurately reflect target populations.
  • Work with analysts to develop sampling strategies for contacting harder-to-reach populations.
  • Manage multiple fast-moving projects at once in close collaboration with colleagues.
  • Work with analysts and various sample vendors to design methodologies to achieve research goals.
  • Work on specialized writing projects as requested.
  • Provide support and assistance outside of the core job function.
  • Accomplish all tasks appropriately assigned or requested.

ENVIRONMENTAL AND PHYSICAL CONDITIONS OF THE JOB

This job is based in our modern, secure, light-filled, open-floor plan office space in Washington, DC. We maintain a hybrid work environment that provides employees flexibility to work from home several days per week. Employees for this position must live within the Greater DC Region to be available for in-person meetings and/or in-office work, as needed or as requested by Company and/or Supervisor. Teleworking as a flexible work arrangement may be altered at the discretion of the Company.

The environmental factors and/or physical requirements of this position include the following: Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and ability to use a keyboard. The employee frequently is required to be in one position for long periods of screen use, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear both in person and over devices. The employee interacts in close spaces and frequently with other workers, vendors, and clients. The office is equipped with an elevator. The position works in an office environment with artificial light and air.
