About the Program and Position:
This is a transitional foster care program for Unaccompanied Children (UC) under the supervision of the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR). An Unaccompanied child (ages 0-17) has fled their home country and crossed the US southern border without an adult. During their stay with us, we provide medical care, case management, life skills classes, and mental health services.
Dance Teachers work to support unaccompanied children with progressive academic service focusing in art, including Social Emotional Learning, acculturation, recreation, and the development of independent living skills.Teachers guide children in our program to become global citizens and agents of positive change in their communities.
How you get to use your skills...
- Maintain a safe, positive classroom environment consistent with Cayuga Centers internal policy and protocol,
- Provide trauma-informed, culturally responsive care, including Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and individualized support services.
- Create differentiated lesson plans that are joyful, creative, and engaging.
- Provide individualized academic instruction to assigned classes based on age group, developmental level, and observed needs.
- Coach and train teachers in Dance Education
- Teach targeted Dance interventions to individual students and small groups of students using research-based strategies
- Support and lead activities designed to improve students' learning in other core subject areas
- Set student goals and instructional outcomes, based on specific student assessments in reading
- Remain up-to-date on Dance research and best approaches
- Contribute to curriculum development, special support services, field trip planning, community outreach, and other Learning Center team projects.
- Collaborate with Skills Trainers, Teacher Aide, Clinicians, Case Managers, and other staff in order to ensure quality care that is tailored to each child's individual needs
- Provide any needed support for daily morning arrivals and afternoon dismissals
- Actively participate and/or complete all professional development requirements including trainings, readings, and pertinent certifications
Schedule:
- Full-time, 40 hours per week on a consistent schedule
- Must be flexible to meet program needs
Experience and Skills
- Bachelor's degree preferred; Teaching Certificate preferred
- Fluency in both English and Spanish required; All agency documentation is required in English, while most classroom instruction is in Spanish
- Classroom experience required, background in teaching Dance / Bilingual Education to all levels
- Experience with learners of all ages and cultural backgrounds preferred
- Portrays cultural competence and appreciates diversity; experience working with immigrant, LGBTQIA, and non-English speaking populations
- Knowledge in modern classroom technologies, including computers, tablets, and smartboards
- Experience in classroom management, student engagement strategies, and classroom intervention strategies for students who have experienced trauma
- Ability to be flexible and adaptable to change
- Demonstrates ability to work effectively in a team context
- Demonstrates empathy and high moral character; strong alignment to Cayuga Centers mission, values, and competencies
- Passion and commitment to teaching, working with children, and serving immigrant and refugee children
Physical Requirements:
- Stand for several hours to conduct daily educational lessons
- Complete required deskwork
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
- Sit/ride in vehicles and public transportation for lengthy periods of time
- Walk up/down stairs as needed
- Walk to enter/exit by the subway and other public transportation as needed
- Walk several blocks to get to required location
