This position is in a civil service competitive class that is subject to examination. If you do not already have permanent NYC civil service status as Cyber Security Analyst, you will have to file to take the civil service exam for this title when offered by Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS). Description:

Position Summary: Under supervision, with considerable latitude for independent action or the exercise of independent judgment, is responsible for the analysis, configuration, implementation, and remediation of Cyber Security issues. Performs related work to improve the overall Cyber Information Technology Analyst posture of the organization.

Reports to: Deputy Director of Information Security, BERS

Direct Reports: N/A.

Key Relationships: The Cyber Information Technology Analyst collaborates closely with the staff throughout BERS, various divisions within New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) and various City agencies, including OTI, NYC Cyber Command and FIS

Responsibilities

  • Conduct cyber risk assessments that protect the business and adhere with compliance and privacy laws.
  • Implement cyber security systems and monitor them for unusual activity across a wide range of products.
  • Conduct threat research.
  • Evaluate, test and document cyber security solutions and controls, and work closely with other Information Technology team members to remediate risk and vulnerability.
  • Assist with cyber security configuration standards for systems and business applications.
  • Use security applications and scanners to monitor the environment.
  • Collect and analyze logs from these applications; configure, maintain, and upgrade these applications and scanners.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on characterizing and analyzing network traffic to identify anomalous activity and potential threats to network resources.
  • Collaborate with internal users, department Managers to facilitate technical and non-technical projects requiring cyber security oversight and to ensure policies, procedures and standards are met.
  • Create new cyber security policies/procedures and improve/update existing policies/procedures.
  • Assign and monitor cyber security training programs for everyone in the organization.
  • Interface with internal and external auditors for risk assessments.
  • Serve as a Cyber Security team member, aiding in Change Management (CM) and Incident Response (IR) teams.
  • Recommend new cyber security solutions as well as effective improvements to existing cyber security controls that do not interfere with the daily business of the organization.
  • Serve as a liaison for the Cyber Security team.
  • Prepare technical reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information.
  • Communicate policies and procedures throughout the organization as well as collect and analyze feedback.

In addition to meeting the minimum requirements, individuals must have two additional years of the experience described in "1" above

Minimum Qualification Requirements:

  1. A baccalaureate degree, from an accredited college including or supplemented by twenty-four (24) semester credits in cyber security, network security, computer science, computer programming, computer engineering, Information Technology, information science, information systems management, network administration, or a pertinent scientific, technical or related area; or
  2. A four-year high school diploma or its equivalent approved by a State’s department of education or a recognized accrediting organization and three years of satisfactory experience in any of the areas described in “1” above; or
  3. Education and/or experience equivalent to “1” or “2”, above. College education may be substituted for up to two years of the required experience in “2” above on the basis that sixty (60) semester credits from an accredited college is equated to one year of experience. In addition, twenty-four (24) credits from an accredited college or graduate school in cyber security, network security, computer science, computer programming, computer engineering, Information Technology, information science, information systems management, network administration, or a pertinent scientific, technical or related area; or a certificate of at least 625 hours in computer programming from an accredited technical school (post high school), may be substituted for one year of experience.

Preferred

  • 2 or more years of experience with cyber security research, analysis, and remediation.
  • 2 or more years of experience in risk management.
  • Experience with technical writing.
  • SQL Query knowledge.
  • Strong Networking, OS, application security knowledge and reporting skills.
  • Experience in Rapid 7, CrowdStrike, KnowBe4.
  • Security+ certification.

Salary: $98,345 - $120,200

(Internal candidates who are selected for this position and who currently hold comparable or less senior positions within the DOE will not earn less than their current salary.)
