Brucemore - a Cedar Rapids area non-profit, historic site, and regional tourism leader - is looking for a part-time Custodian to join their team for an average of 12-16 hours per week. This position has flexible scheduling options but must include some time outside of public tour hours.
The Custodian performs a wide range of general and specialized custodial tasks and housekeeping primarily on the interior of various visitor, staff, and mission serving buildings. This role helps people enjoy the site by ensuring an appropriate level of cleanliness, orderliness, and safety for visitors, volunteers, and staff on a daily, weekly, monthly, and seasonal basis. This position helps minimize disruptions to the public tour schedule and plays an important role in every visit.
The desired candidate must be detail-oriented, self-motivated, and able to work independently most of the time towards shared goals. An interest in creating a positive environment for people to love Brucemore is a critical success factor.
Essential Job Duties to include:
CUSTODIAL AND MAINTENANCE ACTIVITIES
Weekly cleaning and maintenance activities:
- Clean all rooms used by the public or staff, including vacuuming, dusting, washing of floors, walls, and windows; cleaning bathroom fixtures, replenishing bathroom supplies, and removing trash and recycling in the Mansion, Carriage House, Maintenance Building, Bookbindery, and Chicken Coop based on use.
- Perform a wide range of tasks related to the routine housekeeping of the structures and grounds aspiring to the highest professional standards for care of historic sites.
- Perform cleaning and simple maintenance of historic assets according to a level of curatorial care.
- Provide verbal or written reports on the status of maintenance services and activities.
- Inspect storage rooms and utility areas for upkeep and supply control.
- Keep equipment clean and in good working order.
Monthly/seasonal/annual cleaning and maintenance activities:
- Clean kitchen appliances on a cyclical basis and as determined by use.
- Assist the Curator of Museum Collections with deep cleaning procedures annually and other special projects as needed.
- Provide troubleshooting guidance and support, in partnership with the Facilities Manager, for the day-to-day maintenance of the mansion, Visitor Center, and Garden House ensuring clean, safe, and attractive environments for visitors, volunteers, and staff.
- Facilitate the Site Maintenance Specialist in cleaning of the interiors and exteriors of windows seasonally and as needed.
- Order and maintain an adequate inventory of all housekeeping supplies and equipment to provide a clean, safe, and comfortable environment.
- Operate and maintain various tools, equipment, and supplies to ensure they are in good working order, including vacuum cleaners, carpet cleaners, floor scrubbers, mops, and other standard cleaning equipment.
- Provide timely responses to project related matters or work-related issues, including reviewing and approving invoices.
OPERATIONAL SUPPORT
- Facilitate safe and pleasant use of the site by visitors, volunteers, board members, audiences, and other users in close coordination with team members for the enjoyment of the public, the efficiency of the staff, and the preservation of the site.
- Interact with visitors, constituents, and stakeholders in a professional, courteous manner.
- Utilize effective communication concepts, tools, and techniques to communicate with internal and external project participants.
- Mitigate issues that distract from enjoyment of the site or alert appropriate staff when necessary to mitigate concerns, including assisting with maintenance of public areas such as restrooms, walkways, exhibit spaces, gift shop, and other program spaces as needed and picking up debris around the site.
- Assist with special events cleaning and maintenance in accordance with the event's set up process.
- Maintain a level of security in the buildings, such as locking doors, storing keys, and using access codes for restricted areas and rooms.
Position Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Previous work experience in a custodial or maintenance role required.
- Respect for historic spaces and a willingness to learn museum practices.
- A high level of attention to detail to ensure quality of work.
- Ability to prioritize and plan work activities in a timely manner.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision towards team goals.
HOURS: 12-16 hours a week
SCHEDULE: Flexible, but must include some time outside of public tour hours, which are typically offered Wednesday - Saturday, 10am - 4pm and Sunday 1 - 4pm.
WAGE: $17.50 - $20.00 per hour, dependent on experience
