JOB DESCRIPTION
Position Title: Custodian Department: Buildings and Grounds
Classification: Support Staff FLSA: Non-exempt

Purpose of Classification
The purpose of positions in this classification is to clean, setup for events, provide grounds keeping for assigned areas, check building safety concerns and perform building security tasks to provide clean, safe, attractive and comfortable facilities for students, staff and community users.
Distinguishing Features of the Classification
Positions in the classification perform unskilled to semi-skilled manual labor in cleaning and maintaining buildings and grounds under general supervision of maintenance supervisor personnel and at the direction of school principals. The employee may be assigned to weekend and non-office hours of duty, and specific facilities or at different sites as needed. Cleaner responsibilities may vary from building to building and with the time of the year.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this classification. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.
Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Performs cleaning tasks which include: vacuums; sweeps; mops; strips floor finish; finishes floors; cleans carpets; empties trash and recyclable containers; dusts surfaces; scours and sanitizes restroom facilities, sinks and water fountains; washes windows, mirrors, furniture and equipment; replenishes supplies including paper and soap dispensers.
- Removes snow and ice from walkways, building entrances and steps and seasonal maintenance with other employees as necessary.
- Unloads equipment, supplies and materials.
- Assists in set-up and take down of equipment, tables, chairs and bleachers for activities and athletic events.
- Checks building and grounds for safety hazards, removes hazards or reports hazard.
- Answers alarms.
- Monitor condition of building and equipment and report need for repairs to custodial supervisor or submit a work order.
- Monitor or control use of facility while performing cleaning work. Report inappropriate student or visitor behavior and secure or unlock doors as required.
- Demonstrates awareness and compliance with custodial department safety precautions.
- Serves as a role model by demonstrating a positive attitude, timeliness, commitment to quality and strong work habits, and support for building/district programs.
- Maintains confidentiality of student and staff information. Turns in found property to supervisor.
- Helps to maintain a safe environment by following safety protocols and supervising students in a variety of school environments.
Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
High school diploma or equivalent, prior responsible work experience preferably in custodial or building/grounds work, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities. A valid
Wisconsin motor vehicle operator's license required

Language Ability and Interpersonal Communication
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing with teachers, students, principals, vendor representatives, delivery personnel, service/repair personnel, parents and community members.
- Ability to read and understand labels and instructions, particularly on the use and application of cleaning chemicals and products.
- Ability to assemble, copy, record and transcribe data and information, following a prescribed plan.
- Ability to compare, count, differentiate, measure and/or sort data and information.
- Ability to explain, demonstrate and clarify to others within well established policies, procedures and standards.
- Ability to follow specific instructions and respond to simple requests from others.
- Ability to comprehend and interpret a variety of descriptive documents including time cards, operating instructions, accident report forms, leave request forms, product labels and diagrams.
- Ability to use technology to accomplish job responsibilities that may include basic knowledge of e-mail, word processing, and spreadsheet software.
- Works positively and collaboratively with all staff, students, parents/guardians and community members to meet the needs of students.
- Contributes to the development and maintenance of positive public relations between DASD and the community.
- Communicates effectively and respectfully with students, using language and tone appropriate to the student and situation.
Mathematical Ability
Ability to add and subtract, multiply and divide, and calculate percentages, fractions, and decimals.

- Ability to work under little supervision while demonstrating thoroughness and time management.

Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling and climbing all day. The employee must frequently lift and move items over 50 pounds to shoulder height and operate, maneuver and/or steer a variety of custodial, building and grounds equipment, machinery and tools requiring simple but continuous adjustments, such as floor machine, buffers, vacuum cleaners, carpet cleaner, common hand and power tools, lawn mowers and trimmers while performing repetitive movements with both hands. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus .

Environmental Adaptability
This job operates in a school environment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, blood borne pathogens, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions.
