Overview:
We are seeking a technician who will focus on supporting research efforts in Cryogenic Transmission Electron Microscopy (CryoEM) within the CryoEM facility at the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
Our CryoEM facility is a brand-new state-of the art materials characterization facility that is fully equipped with two new Cryo TEM's (Thermo Fisher Scientific Krios G4 and Talos L120C) and powerful CryoEM specimen preparation equipment. As part of our rapidly growing and upbeat team, you will be working with highly interdisciplinary research team across ORNL (spanning expertise in bio and physical sciences) and will develop protocols for preparing and evaluating beam-sensitive biological and other soft matter specimens using pioneering Electron Microscopy preparation and imaging instrumentation.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
Prepare CryoEM specimen of biological and materials sciences samples.
Operate a ThermoFisher Vitrobot Mark IV system to vitrify solution-based samples.
Operate a ThermoFisher Hydra cryogenic plasma focused ion beam (cryo-PFIB), Leica High Pressure Freezer (HPF), and cryo-ultramicrotome for vitrification/thinning of large samples.
Prepare stained TEM specimens for screening.
Maintain detailed lab notes.
Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements.

Basic Qualifications:
Associate's degree in a science-related field and at least two years of experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
Degree in Biochemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Cellular/Molecular Biology, Materials Science, or a closely related field
Some hands-on experience in at least one of the sample preparation modalities - Vitrobot, microtome, or FIB operation.
Microscopy experience (electron or super-resolution light microscopy)
Excellent communication skills, the ability to meet deadlines, and a strong background in laboratory work, with experience preparing CryoEM specimens being a plus.
Ability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.
Special Requirements:
Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
This role required some flexibility in schedule, as sample preparation for some materials may require weekend/off hour preparation.
Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
