Job description

This Criminal Investigator position is with the Investigative Operations Division (IOD) of the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) within U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). This is a Senior Special Agent field position based in Washington, D.C.

As a Criminal Investigator/SSA you will have a senior investigator role in a proactive and/or reactive manner for protective operations and investigations under the jurisdiction of CBP/OPR. Duties shall include, but are not limited to:

  • Conducting protective details and protection planning assignments for senior officials and other dignitaries.
  • Serving as a case agent for inter-agency investigations and leading teams of other special agents and law enforcement offices in investigations or operations.
  • Conducting criminal/administrative investigations on employees and/or associated individuals who are suspected of misconduct, corruption, extortion and other violations affecting national security.
  • Preparing and executing search and arrest warrants, subpoenas, electronic surveillance orders and Reports of Investigations.
  • Mentoring and assisting in the professional development of less experienced Criminal Investigators.

Salary and Benefits

This position starts at a salary of $139,395.00 (GS-14, Step 1) to $181,216.00 (GS-14, Step 10) with promotion potential to $172,075.00 (GS-14 Step 10).

You qualify for the GS-14 grade level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as:

  • Conducting protective details and protection planning assignments for senior officials and other dignitaries; including advance preparation, motorcade route security and threat/medical risk assessment mitigation.
  • Conducting protective intelligence investigations as a case agent and or team lead for inter-agency investigations and leading teams of other special agents and law enforcement officers during investigative operations.
  • Planning complex logistics and coordinating with internal and external partners during protective or investigative planning; communicating with domestic and foreign governmental agencies in support of protective and investigative operations for senior officials and other employees as designated.
  • Providing guidance and direction to other special agents and other law enforcement officials during day-to-day protective operations.

Criminal Investigator Training Program:Criminal Investigators must complete an initial course of basic training, specifically the Criminal Investigator Training Program (CITP) at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, Glynco, Georgia, or an OPR approved equivalent course of instruction and the OPR Special Agent Training Program at the Customs and Border Protection Advanced Training Center, Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, as well as additional training throughout their careers. Both basic and advanced training programs are designed to prepare law enforcement personnel with the skills, aptitudes, and competencies required to serve as a Criminal Investigator.
