PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The hiring range for this position is $30.27 - $37.83 hourly.

**This job announcement is for collecting candidate applications for current and future Crime Scene Investigators. Applicants will be contacted only when a position need is identified, and qualifications match the needs of the position. **
PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assists in investigating Crime Scenes
  • Locates, identifies, classifies collects and preserves Crime Scene evidence
  • Prepares detailed reports on investigations
  • Photographs and videotapes Crime Scenes and evidence
  • Assists coroner at death scenes
  • Attends autopsies to collect evidence and photograph examinations
  • Measures evidence at Crime Scenes using a variety of manual, electronic and computerized measuring devices and creates scaled drawings/diagrams
  • Processes evidence in the laboratory using special powders, chemical solutions, forensic light sources and various camera lenses and filters in order to develop and preserve evidence
  • Testifies in court as required
  • Documents evidence for submission to the Property Unit for storage
  • Maintains proper chain of custody on evidence and proper packaging to preserve and prevent contamination
  • Performs additional duties as required

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
  • Associates Degree in a natural science, Forensic Science, Criminal Justice or a directly related field
Experience:
  • Two (2) years’ experience in Criminal Justice or related field that includes Crime Scene Investigation and laboratory work
Licenses and Certifications:
  • None
Preferred Experience:
  • Crime Scene Investigation experience and/or internships with a law enforcement agency or laboratory
Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of basic biology and chemistry
  • Procedures and techniques of evidence collection and preservation
  • Crime scene investigation and photography
Abilities:
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and citizens
  • Handle stressful situations with tact and diplomacy
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Work under stressful conditions in any weather condition and under adverse physical circumstances
  • Ability to work various shifts, nights, holidays, and weekends
  • Ability to respond to Aurora Police Department within one hour of notification
Skills:
  • Strong technical and analytical skills.
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Occasional Standing/Walking- Occurs up to 2.6 hours to 5.5 hours per shift
Essential Personnel:
  • When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.
Physical Demands:
  • Medium work that involves moving no more than 50 pounds with or without assistance at a time
    • Frequent lifting and carrying of 10 to 20 pounds of equipment and/or evidence
    • Frequent standing and walking to investigate Crime Scene Frequent hand/eye coordination for operation of office equipment
    • Hand/eye coordination to operate computer, laboratory instruments and video equipment
    • Foot/eye coordination to operate motor vehicle
    • Visual acuity correctable to 20/40 with no color impairment to interpret data
    • Speech and hearing to maintain communications with other employees and citizens Memory to retain updated processes, complete tasks that are important but infrequent and highly technical tasks.
    • Judgment to ensure confidential information remains protected
Work Environment:
  • Essential duties performed both indoors and outdoors at Crime Scenes in all weather conditions
  • Works in a laboratory environment; possible exposure to biohazard contamination, chemicals, odors and noise
  • May encounter fumes from certain chemicals
  • Nature of tasks exposes staff to possible vicarious trauma due to the nature of some crimes and the need to review of reports and digital evidence during intake release procedures
  • Shift work to include days, nights, working weekends and holidays
Equipment Used:
  • Frequently uses computer keyboard and telephone, fax machines, copiers and microfilm equipment
  • Camera, laboratory instruments, video equipment

  • This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment
