Under general supervision, this part-time position conducts Crime Scene and forensic science investigations.
*This position performs duties deemed to be safety sensitive. • Identifies, collects, preserves, packages, transports, and documents evidence; utilizes various techniques to record, collect, and examine evidence.
• Performs custodial duties; maintains a proper chain of custody on evidence and proper packaging to preserve and prevent contamination.
• Maintains records and inventory of all property and evidence; receives, records, secures, and disposes of property as established under law, policy, procedure, and municipal ordinance.
• Provides documentation of Crime Scenes, including written notes, basic photography, and rough sketching.
• Prepares departmental reports of Crime Scene investigations and laboratory casework.
• Attends autopsies to document injuries and collect evidence.
• Testifies in courts of law as a witness.
• Reproduces, tests, and transports evidence to other forensic laboratories for advanced testing not conducted onsite.
• Tracks cases and the statute of limitations so property and evidence can be purged efficiently.
• Assists with training programs and community relations events.
• Procures property, evidence, and laboratory supplies; maintains inventory of property, evidence, and laboratory supplies.
• Maintains facilities and equipment in a safe, sanitary, and orderly manner.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requires a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Forensic Science, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science, or related field.
Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid Driver's License issued by the State of Colorado for the type of vehicle or equipment operated; safe driving record and a minimum of two (2) years of driving history.
Employees within the Crime Scene Investigator position series are eligible to participate in a self-initiated progression for promotional advancement through investigator levels. Below are the distinguishing characteristics of each level:
PT Crime Scene Investigator I:
This entry-level position is within the Crime Scene Investigator position series. This position is distinguished from the PT Crime Scene Investigator II by performing limited and routine assignments and duties. The PT Crime Scene Investigator I is a training platform for employees with little or no directly related work experience.
This level requires an International Association of Identification (IAI) Level I certification within one and a half (1.5) years of hire.
This level requires competent demonstration of the following skills/duties within one (1) year of hire:

• Conducts forensic science investigations.
• Processes basic or routine Crime Scenes.
• Identifies, collects, preserves, packages, and documents biological, friction ridge, impression, and other physical evidence on basic Crime Scenes.
• Conducts basic evidence processing in the laboratory.
• Provides basic Crime Scene processing for forensic evidence; conducts presumptive and latent field tests for biological evidence.
• Provides basic training, education, and mentoring to Police Officers on general evidence collection and packaging.

PT Crime Scene Investigator II:
This is a mid-level position within the Crime Scene Investigator position series. This position is distinguished from the PT Crime Scene Investigator I by performing the full range of assignments and duties. The PT Crime Scene Investigator II receives only occasional instruction or assistance and is fully aware of the operating procedures and policies associated with the Section. Movement to/or placement in an Investigator II role presumes all requirements of an Investigator I (or the equivalent) have been met.
This level requires three (3) years of related experience.
This level requires the following be obtained within six (6) months of hire: an IAI Level II certification; and within one (1) year of hire a Level I Basic At-Scene Accident Investigation certification, and a Drone Operation certification (to include UAS licenses).
This level requires competent demonstration of the following skills/duties within six (6) months of hire:

• Conducts forensic science investigations of more complex Crime Scenes under limited supervision.
• Demonstrates various evidence recording, collecting, and examination techniques including, but not limited to, photography, videography, sketching, measuring, note-taking, report writing, physical and chemical enhancement of latent, patent, and plastic impressions, casting shoe impressions, tire impressions and tool marks, and documenting bloodstain patterns and trajectory of bullets.
• Processes advanced Crime Scenes under limited supervision.
• Conduct investigations in a sequence dictated by unique scene circumstances.
• Assists detectives and officers in the advanced collection and preservation of evidence.
• Provides basic training, education, and mentoring to Crime Scene Investigator I.
• Operates and performs preventive maintenance and minor repairs on state-of-the-art laboratory and analytical instruments and equipment.

PT Crime Scene Investigator III:
This is an upper-level position within the Crime Scene Investigator position series. This position is distinguished from the others within this series by the years of experience, additional certifications, and the performance of the full range of tasks, duties, and special assignments. The PT Crime Scene Investigator III receives only limited instruction or assistance and is fully aware of operating procedures and policies associated with the Section. Movement to/or placement in an Investigator III role presumes all requirements of an Investigator II (or the equivalent) have been met.
This level requires five (5) years of increasingly responsible, related experience.
This level requires the following be obtained within six (6) months of hire: an IAI Level III certification; and within two (2) years of hire, a Level II Technical Accident Investigation certification.

• Conducts highly complex forensic science investigations; leads forensic science investigations under limited or no supervision.
• Processes complex Crime Scenes independently.
• Provides advanced Crime Scene documentation.
• Provides advanced Crime Scene analysis.
• Conduct reconstructions.
• Conducts advanced laboratory evidence processing; trains Investigator II in advanced laboratory processes.
• Conducts independent chemical and biochemical analysis of evidence to presumptively identify unknowns and interpret results for use in criminal investigations.
• Resolves problems encountered during daily operations and determines appropriate solutions.
• Assists detectives and officers in the advanced collection and preservation of evidence.
• Provides advanced training, education, and mentoring to Evidence Technicians, Police Officers, and Crime Scene Investigator I and II.

• Knowledge of up-to-date office practices and procedures.
• Knowledge of computers and electronic data processing.
• Skill in identifying Crime Scene evidence.
• Ability to think critically.
• Ability to testify in a court of law.
• Ability to deal effectively with members of the public, coworkers, officials, and others through written and verbal communication.
• Ability to work effectively and exercise discretion in stressful or emergency situations.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
• Ability to learn the Town's geography and street system and use that knowledge in daily work activities and tasks.
• Ability to successfully pass a pre-employment background including but not limited to: drug screen, polygraph test, physical, etc.

This is a part time position. Schedule / hours may vary and will not extend past 29 hours /week.
Nights, weekends and holidays may be required.

CSI I: $32.23 - $46.73
CSI II: $35.45 - $51.40
CSI III: $38.99 - $56.54
