Reports to: Transportation Operations Supervisor
Salary range: $2,774 - $3,329 (semi-monthly)
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt, hourly
Position closes: open until filled
Please keep in mind that the range mentioned above is the minimum to mid-point of the salary range for the role. Hiring at the mid-point of the range would not be typical in order to allow for future & continued salary growth.

POSITION SUMMARY: Performs specialized and skilled procedures in road and bridge maintenance and construction; operates heavy and light equipment in all phases of road and bridge construction, maintenance, repair, and improvements of County roads; plans, coordinates and supervises the daily work activities of a department crew in constructing, maintaining, repairing and improving County roads; some physical labor may also be required.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The duties and responsibilities listed below are central to the job and the employee must be able to perform each function satisfactorily. (1) Supervise crew personnel by motivating, planning, organizing, and assigning daily work for the construction, maintenance and repair of County roads according to government specifications.
(2) Assist Operations Supervisor with recruiting, hiring, training, and evaluating employees assigned to a crew.
(3) Responsible for managing all leave requests for crew.
(4) Participate in developing the annual budget in collaboration with other Division supervisors.
(4) Perform specialized and technical procedures in road and bridge maintenance and construction; operate heavy and light equipment in all phases of road and bridge construction, maintenance, and improvements; as well as during emergency situations.
(5) Administer the timely removal of snow and other hazards from County roads; monitor and respond to weather conditions that adversely affect traffic.
(6) Responsible for ensuring a high level of safety for crew employees by compliance with safety regulations and practices.
(7) Responsible for proper care of facilities and equipment assigned to personnel.
(8) Respond to calls and coordinate personnel as required in after-hours emergency situations.
(9) Fabricate parts and perform welding and installation operations.
(10) Provide support to Operations Supervisor as needed.
Requirements

(1) Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Knowledge of: principles and processes for providing excellent customer service, including customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction; various Federal and State rules and regulation; principles of strategic planning and decision making; leadership, management and supervisory principles and methods; basic budget principles.

  • Skilled in: use of basic computer software programs; understanding and applying pertinent laws, rules, regulations and policies; using tact, discretion, initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines; maintaining confidentiality; organizing work, setting priorities, meeting critical deadlines and following up on assignments with minimum direction and supervision; applying logical thinking to solve problems or accomplish tasks; working in a deadline driven environment; initiating and responding to medium volume of daily calls/contact; interacting with all levels of internal and external professionals while developing strong productive relationships; organization and time management.

  • Ability to: perform the principles of road construction, maintenance and work zone traffic control; manage and coordinate personnel, equipment and materials on multiple projects; lead in a positive manner; proficiently operate a variety of assigned equipment; work with minimal supervision; communicate effectively in writing and verbally; establish and maintain effective and professional working relationships with co-workers, other county departments, representatives of other agencies and organizations, and the public.

(2) Experience/Education: High school diploma or equivalent; four (4) years of related public works experience; one (1) year of supervisor experience; any acceptable combination of education, training and experience that provides the listed knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted.
(3) Visual Acuity/Hearing/Speaking: Must be able to write and read; able to hear, see and speak.
(4) Physical Effort/Dexterity: This position requires physical exertion and the normal range of motion and dexterity; ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, bend, crawl or climb and use a variety of hand tools; ability to lift, pull or drag up to 80 lbs.
(5) Environmental Factors: Requires exposure to adverse conditions for extended periods of time; such conditions include dirt, noise, rain, snow, and extremes of temperatures.
(6) Work Schedule/Characteristics: 40 hours per week; varied work schedules are required during certain weather conditions; availability outside normal business hours to include weekends may be required.
(7) License/Certification Requirements: Possession of and ability to maintain a valid Colorado Commercial Class A driver's license; possession of a current flagger certification; may require special license endorsement and certifications.
