Job description

This is an AFSCME Clerical position. Bargaining unit consideration begins on 1/4/2024 and ends on 1/10/2024.
This position supports the Course Materials Manager with all aspects of the Course Materials Department at the UMD Stores. Duties include securing course material needs from faculty, course material procurement and processing, inventory management, and accounts receivables processing. This person also assists with special orders from individuals and Campus Departments. A customer service mindset, problem resolution focus and strong attention to detail are key attributes for success in the role. In addition to Course Material responsibilities, this position covers customer service specialist responsibilities roughly 20% of the time.
This position is part-time, 30hrs/week
Key Responsibilities
Course Materials Support - 50%

  • Provides excellent customer service to meet the needs of students, faculty and the UMD staff.
  • Consistently demonstrates awareness of the customer in actions, priorities, and decisions.
  • Provides direct, complete, and timely outcomes to all inquiries.
  • Go to person for students during course material ordering, pick up and buy back cycles.
  • Resolve customer problems in a courteous and timely manner

System Use - 20%:
  • Develops a high competency with software used in the department (MBS, Verba | VitalSource)
  • Is accurate and efficient on POS terminals/registers.
  • Competent in the use of other software applications (MS-Office suite, Google suite)

Lower-Level Store Support - 20%:
  • Customer Service Desk coverage
  • Supply buying Support

Other - 10%:
  • Brings any concerns to the Course Materials Manager
  • Builds and maintains strong relationships with Faculty and staff regarding adoptions and other course needs.
  • Trains and guides on-call and student workers.
  • Assists with the shipping, receiving, and stocking of Course Materials
  • Takes an inventory of Course Materials three times a year and resolves variance issues

About the Job:
***THIS IS AN AFSCME CLERICAL BARGAINING UNIT POSITION***

The position is 12 months, 30 hours per week, and starting hourly rate of pay is $21.06.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma/GED plus two (2) years of related office experience. Training/education may be substituted for some of the years of experience. Computer experience required. Specific knowledge/skills may be required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Experience using various software solutions (MS-Excel, email, etc.).
  • Ability to lead by example, make sound decisions, act on ideas, and demonstrate professionalism
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Growth mindset

Physical/Other Requirements
  • Work varied hours/days as business dictates
  • Able to reach, push, pull, stand, squat and bend for up to 8 hours or longer as necessary.
  • Able to operate and use all equipment necessary to run the Course Materials department.
  • Able to move or handle merchandise throughout the store weighing up to 50 pounds
