About the team and position

Join Carvana's Legal Department in the role of Counsel/Senior Counsel, Consumer Finance. Carvana is looking for a motivated attorney to serve as a key part of Carvana's Legal Department, responsible for the efficient and effective management of Carvana's regulatory and legal compliance obligations as it relates to automotive consumer lending services. This role will report directly to our Associate General Counsel, Consumer Finance and Compliance.

What you'll be doing

  • Develop a mastery of Carvana business processes and systems and provide counsel to Carvana stakeholders on legal requirements related to the sale of automobiles, consumer protection, and consumer lending services.
  • Provide timely, concise and business-focused legal advice on consumer financial services law and payments law and regulations ( e.g. TILA, UDAAP, FCRA, Regulations Z, E, and NACHA rules).
  • Conduct comprehensive research and analysis, and synthesize that information into a clear interpretation of Consumer Finance state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Stay up to date on new and changing developments in applicable legal and regulatory requirements and lead the communication of relevant changes to the Compliance Team and Carvana legal and business stakeholders.
  • Present guidance in a digestible format to all levels of business partners/stakeholders related to ongoing organizational legal requirements and in response to specific inquiries posed by business partners.
  • Partner with other legal professionals to provide specialized, innovative, joint guidance involving new and existing Carvana consumer lending business ventures.
  • Manage and execute on projects and other deliverables as assigned by Legal Team leadership.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What you should know/have

The successful Counsel/Senior Counsel, Consumer Finance is a self-starter and team oriented. They are highly attentive to detail, focused on customer service, a problem solver, and comfortable with ambiguity while managing multiple high-priority projects at once. This position requires an understanding of Carvana's organizational goals and an appreciation of how the Legal Team's efforts can support those goals, while simultaneously leading the management of risks related to Carvana's complex regulatory and legal requirements. This position requires frequent interaction with Carvana's diverse legal and business teams and requires clear communication that presents complex information in a concise and easy-to-understand manner.

We also look for:

  • A JD and membership in good standing with a United States Bar.
  • 5-7 years of experience providing legal support to sophisticated businesses at a national law firm, with expertise in state/federal Consumer Finance law; additional experience in-house at a national company and/or experience in automotive lending is a plus but not required.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills.
  • Superior research skills and ability to condense complex Consumer Finance issues into concise and easily understandable summaries.
  • Enthusiasm and commitment to leadership within the Legal Team and collaboration across stakeholder relationships.
  • Experience influencing others to take action.
  • Experience interacting with and working directly with/for internal/external business partners.

We'd be thrilled if you also have

  • Substantive experience with state/federal auto dealer regulations and best practices.
  • Consumer loan servicing experience, including a significant understanding of the complex dynamic of master servicing and subservicing.
  • Project management experience.
  • Experience defining and implementing process improvements.
