We are looking for a Corporate Counsel who will provide legal support and strategic advice to the Resolution Copper team based in Arizona, North America. This role is part of the Corporate Legal team and reports to the Senior Corporate Counsel, Resolution.

Rio Tinto Legal plays a key role in executing the company's core business strategy and provides legal services and expertise of the highest standards to the Rio Tinto Group, at a corporate level as well as in support of activities on the ground. The legal team partners with operations, projects, and studies teams to identify opportunities to minimize risk and lead the business in a sustainable and innovative future while protecting Rio Tinto's reputation.

The Corporate Counsel role will work in a team environment with the other members of the Rio Tinto Legal team who are based in various locations in the United States.  Travel may be required in the United States and potentially internationally.

This role is a great opportunity for a highly motivated individual and involves:

Providing advice and assistance in managing the legal aspects and risks of the business objectives, including stakeholder engagement;

• Ensuring operational considerations are appropriately addressed in legal recommendations;
• Providing timely, accurate, independent and commercially-focused legal advice with a view to avoiding potential problem areas and resolving issues as advantageously as possible to Rio Tinto by balancing legal/regulatory risk with other material business threats and opportunities (HSE, Communities, Reputation, Financial);
• Drafting and negotiating arrangements with third parties including correspondence and agreements with regulators, other commercial parties and relevant stakeholders;
• Supporting with permitting, approvals, land use and access issues;
• Sourcing and managing external legal resources and project-related consultants;
• Pro-actively leading or supporting litigation or dispute resolution;
• Maintaining awareness of, and advising on, relevant external legal developments;

  About you

 To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:

• Minimum requirement is an undergraduate degree and juris doctorate degree from an ABA-accredited law school;
• Licenses/Certifications: Licensed to practice law in the U.S. (licensed, or ability to obtain license, to practice law in Arizona via examination or admission on motion within one year of commencement of employment would be an advantage);
• Minimum of 5 years of post-qualification experience as a legal practitioner at a law firm or corporate legal department in the U.S.
• Significant experience in the area of environmental and water law (preferably in the natural resources context) and industry/sector experience (highly desirable);
• Experience in directing and advising on litigation strategy and matters;
• Language: English (additional Spanish language capability would be an advantage);
• Demonstrated ability to work across multiple jurisdictions;
• Strong problem solving, strategic and analytical capability, as well as commercial acumen;
