Description
Curbside Groceries is striving to reach the goal of bringing affordable, healthy food to areas of Ward 8 and PG county that are experiencing transportation barriers and gaps in accessibility, in a model where product sales cover the costs of personnel, operating expenses and food. To achieve this goal, it is essential that the drivers are full, active members of the curbside team.

Curbside Groceries is a mobile grocery truck bringing groceries for sale to areas experiencing transportation barriers and gaps in accessibility of affordable, healthy food. Operating in neighborhoods across Ward 8, Curbside Groceries sells a full selection of foods—including fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy, and proteins—to provide residents in low food access areas with grocery options and a selection of essential personal care items year-round. Curbside Groceries is an initiative of the Capital Area Food Bank, presented through a partnership with Giant Food, J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott Foundation, and the A. James and Alice B. Clark Foundation. The DC Curbside Groceries Coordinator will play a critical role in the day-to-day operations of the truck, support the recruitment of new sites, and manage customer engagement. This candidate will be responsible for all aspects of the day-to-day operation of the grocery truck project. Successful candidates have the proven ability to independently move a project forward with professional maturity. The manager will work closely with the Grocery Truck Manager at each market stop to service the community with affordable, healthy market basket of foods. The position requires working closely with other departments, especially food resources and development department.

Essential Functions:

Communication, Community Engagement, & Customer Service – 65%

  • Displays excellence in customer service through embodying a welcoming and charismatic presence and executing on the Steps of Service outlined by the Curbside Groceries manager

  • Ability to grow a strong customer base through relationship building

  • Execute on strategies to increase basket size and customer count for the Curbside Groceries truck (e.g., loyalty programs, suggestive selling, relationship-building)

  • Share input on truck activities and actively contribute during weekly team meetings

  • Assist in development of new sites including investigating partnerships based on guidance provided by the Curbside Manager

  • Conduct customer engagement via email list serve, text, etc.

  • Share back feedback from the community and current Curbside customers about the Curbside Groceries experience (e.g., menu offerings)

Truck Operations and Inventory Management – 35%

  • Assist with daily cash transactions

  • Ensure truck is stocked with adequate supplies (I.e., menus, surveys, bags, etc.)

  • Ensures accurate accounting of grocery inventory and spoilage

  • Supports the set up and breakdown of the market at each location according to service standards

  • Load and unload grocery items for safe food storage according to FIFO

  • Ensure food safety standards are met throughout market process

  • Restock products, and maintain the market’s inventory and produce quality

  • Conduct transactions, handling different payments

  • Assist in inspection of inventory for appropriateness for sale and/or donation

Miscellaneous

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements:

  • HS Diploma or GED equivalent;

  • At least 1 – 3 years of work experience in a related field;

  • At least 2 - 3 years of customer service experience or member management High comfort level working with diverse community organizations;

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal Proficient in Microsoft Office systems;

  • Experience with electronic databases and internet resources;

  • Ability to Obtain Certified Food Protection Manager certification;

  • Knowledge of the DC Metro Area Experience using various data base and software systems;

  • Ability to defuse and resolve challenges with customers;

  • Commitment to creating food access in every community;

  • Satisfactory safe driving record Ability to follow GPS or routing system to reach Grocery Truck.

Working Conditions:

  • Regularly required to use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.

  • Frequently required to stand; walk; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.

  • Occasionally required to sit and climb or balance.

  • Must regularly lift and/or move objects up to 20 pounds, frequently lift and/or move objects up to 50 pounds, and

  • Occasionally lift and/or move objects that weigh more than 100 pounds.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

  • Drives in traffic, an throughout the community

  • General food distribution center; contains moving forklifts and pallet jacks

  • Frequent exposure to changes in temperature conditions

  • Work hours will be determined by the need of the community the Grocery truck which may include evening and weekend hours.

Reporting:

  • Manager of Social Business

Schedule:

  • Working hours Tuesday - Saturday 10:00am to 6:30pm;

  • Occasional remote work available, primarily an in-person role;

  • Work hours will be determined by the need of the community which may include varying evening and weekend hours.
