Organization Overview: The Goddard Riverside Community Center (Goddard Riverside) and the Stanley M. Isaacs Neighborhood Center (Isaacs Center) are well-established Manhattan community-based agencies that support services to approximately 30,000 New Yorkers. We are two of New York City’s leading human services organizations meeting the needs of children, youth and families, homeless individuals, and older adults through-out Manhattan and New York City. Purpose of Position: The Controller position is accountable for the accounting operations of the company, to include the production of periodic financial reports, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of controls and budgets designed to mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of the company's reported financial results, and ensure that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles or international financial reporting standards.
Salary Range: $170,000 to $200,000
Schedule: Monday through Friday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm
Roles, Responsibilities, and Essential DutiesManagement
Supervises program accountants
Maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures
Manage outsourced functions
Oversee the operations of the accounting department, including the design of an organizational structure adequate for achieving the department's goals and objectives
Oversee the accounting operations of the affiliates, especially their control systems, transaction-processing operations, and policies and procedures
Transactions
Ensure that accounts payable are paid in a timely manner
Ensure that all reasonable discounts are taken on accounts payable
Ensure that accounts receivables are posted daily and collected promptly
Ensure payroll is processed in a timely manner
Ensure that periodic bank reconciliations are completed
Ensure that required debt payments are made on a timely basis
Maintain the chart of accounts
Maintain an orderly accounting filing system and an accurate general ledger
Maintain a system of controls over accounting transactions
Ensure all balance sheet accounts are reconciled quarterly
Follow up on accounts receivable
Reporting
Manage and prepare cash flow reports and financial analyses
Prepare and analyze financial statements and balance sheets on a regular basis
Issue timely and complete financial statements
Coordinate the preparation of the corporate annual report
Recommend benchmarks against which to measure the performance of company operations
Calculate and issue financial and operating metrics
Manage the production of the annual budget and forecasts
Calculate variances from the budget and report significant issues to management
Provide for a system of management cost reports
Provide financial analyses as needed, in particular for capital investments, pricing decisions, and contract negotiations
Compliance
Coordinate the provision of information to external auditors for the annual audit
Manage and prepare annual audits (including A-133 and day care/head start audits) and other supporting schedules
Monitor debt levels and compliance with debt covenants
Comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements
Manage and track all tax returns and other corporate filings
Establish and monitor cost principles
Additional Accountabilities
Responsible for all financial filings related to grant funding sources
The controller will assume certain responsibilities of the CFO in their absence
Qualifications/Educational Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree in accounting or related field required
Strongly desired to have obtained a Certified Public Accountant designation and/or have audit experience
5-10 years’ experience in financial management, accounting and administrative operations including staff supervision
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
Familiarity with nonprofit accounting standards and requirements
Strong experience in cash flow management and financial analysis
Highly effective leadership ability
Ability to motivate staff and ensure productivity
Computer competency and familiarity with accounting packages – knowledge of Intacct accounting systems is a plus

Highly analytical with a problem-solving focus
