WHAT YOU'LL DO
The Controller provides leadership and manages all aspects of corporate accounting to ensure that the corporation's accounting practices conform with generally accepted accounting principles and include internal controls sufficient to safeguard assets and ensure reporting integrity. Plans, organizes, and directs the operations of the accounting department, including revenue recognition, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, cost accounting, fixed assets, project accounting, contribution accounting and any other accounting matters that may arise. Ensures that accounting processes are well-organized and efficient. Documents accounting policies and procedures. Trains and develops staff - both accounting department staff and internal stakeholders that participate in work flows that have financial impact. Ensures that employees are cross-trained and that the department capacity and demand for services are in balance.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Financial Transaction Processing and Reporting Oversight & Risk Management
Maintains current knowledge of organizational policies and procedures, federal and state policies and directives, and current accounting standards. Develops and documents accounting policies and procedures accordingly. Oversees all accounts, ledgers and reporting systems and ensures compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements. Owns the functionality and security of accounting and reporting systems in partnership with the Information Technology department. Supports CFO in engaging the board's audit and finance committees around issues and trends in financial operating models and delivery. Oversees all financial, project/program and grants accounting; ensure that expenses are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period. Directs preparation of financial statements and business activity reports including those required by statute or contract. Plans and directs implementation of internal controls to ensure all assets are safeguarded and properly accounted for. Monitors systems and procedures to support effective program implementation contributing to unmodified Financial Audit, Single Audit and Retirement Plan audit opinions. Oversees tax compliance and reporting on B & O, property, 990, 5500 and 1099 tax returns.
Leadership - Departmental
Coaches employees to continuously develop their skills and capacity. Monitors and evaluates the performance of accounting staff, recommending and implementing personnel actions, such as promotions and dismissals. Supervises managers responsible for financial reporting, accounting, billing, collections, payroll, fixed assets, project accounting, and cost accounting. Leverages current accounting team members, clarifying responsibilities to align with organization goals. Maintains consistent performance standards and motivation of subordinates. Provides feedback to direct reports on performance and expectations for their positions.
Leadership - Pioneer at Large
Provides direction and assistance to other organizational units regarding accounting policies, internal control and efficient utilization of resources. Teaches units how to code revenues and expenses and review and understand their financial reports. Responds to inquiries for the purpose of resolving problems, providing information and/or referring to appropriate personnel. Partners with Human Resources and UBS on annual Retirement Plan Education. Facilitates meetings, workshops and trainings for the purpose of identifying issues, developing recommendations supporting other staff, and serving as a representative for Accounting.
Leadership External
Develops and maintains relationships with auditors, bank, tax and regulatory authorities, insurance, and other service providers. Partners with trustees, third party administrators and financial advisors in the oversight of organization's two retirement plans.. Communicates plan changes with HR, ERISA attorney, Third Party Administrator, Investment Advisors and employees. Co-ordinates retirement audit requirements with HR, Financial Advisors and Third Party Administrators
Transaction Oversight
  • Maintains a system of internal controls over accounting transactions to ensure:
  • Accounts payable are paid in a timely manner.
  • Discounts are taken on accounts payable.
  • Accounts receivable are collected promptly.
  • Employee timekeeping and labor distributions are approved and accurate.
  • Payroll transmissions meet required deadlines.
  • Tax returns are filed timely and all tax payments are timely.
  • Daily cash reports are complete and accurately recorded.
  • Bank covenants are calculated correctly and reported timely.
  • Required debt payments are made on a timely basis.
  • Legal and regulatory requirements are met.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Proficient with computers and copiers.
Proficient in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
Excellent customer service skills for interacting with both internal and external customers.
Personal qualities of integrity, credibility and unwavering commitment to Pioneer's mission; a proactive, hands-on strategic thinker who will own, in partnership with the CFO the responsibility for accounting.
Commitment to recruiting, mentoring, training a diverse team; foresight and ability to delegate accordingly.
Strong interpersonal and communications skills; experience in effectively communicating key data.
Ability and desire to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels including finance and non-finance managers.
WHAT YOU'LL BRING
(Any Equivalent Combination of Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, and Experience)
  • Bachelor of Science in Accounting
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) March 2018
  • Ten years supervisory experience in a Controller position. Solid experience coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, , accounts receivable, accounts payable, general ledger, payroll, and grants.
