Our client located in South Boston is looking to hire a Controller on a direct hire basis. This position is on site so you must be comfortable with commuting to the location on a daily basis. This position has the possibility of growing into the CFO position. This is a smaller credit union that has been established for over 100 years. Must have CREDIT UNION EXPERIENCE. 
 
JOB TITLE:  Controller                                                               
In this role, you would provide leadership and direction to the day-to-day operation of a major organizational component of the credit union - Accounting and Finance.  Contribute to the creation, implementation, and administration of Credit Union wide policies related to Accounting.  Direct the activities of staff and represent the Credit Union to regulatory agencies, other financial organizations, trade associations and others.  Develop and maintain accurate accounting information concerning income, expense, assets, liabilities and capital as a basis for Management planning and decision making and fulfilling financial reporting requirements. Responsible for internal controls which promote the safeguarding of assets, procedures which result in reliable financial records and operational efficiency, and financial reporting in compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and regulatory requirements, including tax reporting.  Oversee the Credit Union’s the preparation of financial and regulatory reports, budgets and forecasts. Respond to questions and/or provide information upon request from members (internal and external).
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: (Includes but not limited to)
·       Present financial statements to C-Suite.  Review and analyze monthly financial reports. Keep abreast of changes in accounting principles and industry trends as they affect the credit union. Implement new accounting rules and ensure existing procedures are consistent with GAAP and contain appropriate internal controls.
·       Review and file state and federal regulatory and financial reports.  
·       Calculate allowance for loan loss and ensure compliance with CECL.
·       Support Credit Union Regulatory Compliance objectives and recommend changes to support the requirements.  Serve as liaison for CU financial regulatory audits with NCUA and state examiners. 
Direct:
·       The maintenance and control of all asset, liability and capital accounts of the credit union.  
·       The classification, recording, summarization and financial reporting of all income and expenses.
·       The development and implementation of internal controls and procedures.
·       Monthly, analyze and investigate budget variances.  Review a variety of financial reports on a daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and year end basis.  
·       Implement new accounting systems and revise existing systems as needed including related controls; seek and implementers department efficiencies.
·       Prepare information for tax return preparation and coordinates with external CPA firm for Form 990 and Form 990-T. Files returns as needed.
·       Prepare and review financial statements for the annual audit of the Pension and 401k Plans, as well as quarterly reconciliations , etc. 
·       Review daily and monthly liquidity reports. Ensure liquidity target is within policy.
·       Liaison with external auditors in coordinating the completion of fiscal year-end audits, including the preparation of technical financial footnotes, as well as coordinates interim, and planning audits. 
·       Manage vendor due diligence for Accounting vendors and ensure annual risk assessments of vendors. 
·       Participate on multifunctional committees, Ex ALCO, Investment. Give input that meets the needs of the organization while maintaining or improving members service. Communicate necessary information to accounting staff.
·       Supervise, direct and control the activities of staff.  Ensure a trained, motivated and professional staff capable of providing efficient and effective Accounting and Operational services to internal and external customers.  Interview, schedule, train and assign work. Establish performance expectations and monitor results.  Recommend the discipline and/or discharge of staff, while maintaining required personnel documentation.  Coach and counsel staff, as necessary.
·       Coordinate accounting activities with other departments.  Provide related expertise for expanded project management objectives.  Track projects, related expenses, and capital expenditures.
·       Establish, update and communicate Board policies and procedures, including internal controls.  Administer uniform accounting systems for cost and general accounting and budgetary purposes, as well as support ALM and Budget functions.
·       Complete required annual training; BSA, OFAC, Information Security, Ethics, etc.
·       Perform other accounting, finance and administrative duties as assigned.
·       Other duties as assigned. 
Oversee:
·       Financial Reporting (monthly Board Reports)
·       Regulatory Reporting (quarterly Call Report)
·       Timeliness and accuracy of all financial records (includes daily balancing of all teller work and journal vouchers)
·       Accounting records retention and recovery
·       Accounting Business Continuity
·       Maintenance of Accounting policies and procedures manual
·       General Ledger maintenance
·       Fixed asset accounting
·       Investment accounting
·       Accounts payable
·       General Ledger posting
·       Bank accounts, checking accounts and other monthly reconciliations
·       Placement of overnight investments and funds management 
·       Tax compliance, reporting, and remittance for items such as Sales, Personal Property, Real Estate, Backup Withholding, 1099-Misc., etc. 
·       Credit life and credit disability reporting and remittance
·       Cost analysis, studies, and maintenance of cost information for use by management
·       Periodic release testing of core processing system
 
REQUIREMENTS
·       BA/BS in Accounting or Finance. Graduate degree and/or CPA or CMA preferred.    
  • 5 to 10 years experience in financial institution accounting either in a financial institution or public accounting firm.  
  • Minimum 3 years previous experience as an Accounting department manager.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of GAAP, CU regulations, legislation and financial reporting.
  • Previous experience with external auditors, preferably with NCUA and State examiners.
  • Previous budgeting and ALM experience.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal, written, telephone and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to talk with non-financial people.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects/priorities simultaneously and produce the desired results.
  • PC proficient, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and the Internet as well as other spreadsheets and financial analysis programs.
 
Compensation is based upon experience, range is $120k-150k plus a full benefits package.
