The West Chester University Foundation is currently searching for a Controller to join our finance team. The Controller is responsible for the overall financial management and production of accurate, timely financial reporting for the WCU Foundation. The Controller is responsible for all aspects of the entity’s financial activity and reporting.
Essential Job Functions:
- Responsible for understanding the accounting and reporting standards applicable to the Foundation and ensuring that the financial recordkeeping conforms to those standards.
- Manage the accounting operations of the organization, with particular emphasis on controls systems, transaction –processing operations and adherence to policies and procedures
- Responsible for overall administration of financial accounting systems.
- Responsible for understanding gift reporting and other benchmarking standards applicable to the industry.
- Work closely with the operations area to ensure accurate gift recording and reporting.
- Manage restricted funds (WCUF).
- Responsible for cash management including reporting of the unrestricted and restricted cash.
- Manage and prepare accounting and reporting for grants.
- Meet and communicate regularly with University staff regarding fund and grant balances and reporting.
- In coordination with the Senior Accountant, prepare, review and post journal entries.
- Responsible for oversight of all reconciliations and journal entries necessary for accurate accounting. Perform system reconciliations, fund reconciliation, account reconciliations and related analysis, as needed.
- Provide scholarship oversight and training for reconciliation process of WCUF Scholarship disbursements to Scholarship Manager.
- Preparation of schedules required for annual financial audit and assistance as necessary on the audit work.
- Review audited financial statements and federal form 990 for accuracy.
- Maintain technical and staffing resources to successfully attain goals. Provide leadership to the finance team:
- Oversee, direct, and organize the work of the team.
- Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality.
- Mentor and develop staff using a supportive and collaborative approach: ensure staff members receive timely and appropriate training and development.
- Establish and monitor staff performance and development goals, assign responsibilities, set objectives, establish priorities, provide consistent and on-going feedback, and conduct annual performance appraisals.
- Other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements/Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
- Minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in accounting.
- Knowledge of modern and complex principles and practices of accounting.
- Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel and Outlook). Advanced experience with MS Excel preferred.
- Proficiency with or the ability to quickly learn the organization’s financial software (general ledger and reporting) system.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple projects and meet strict deadlines for deliverables.
- Effective oral and written communication skills. Ability to clearly communicate by email, phone, or in person to obtain and deliver detailed information. Ability to present complex information in a form that is easily understood by various audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to empower others, manage change and foster teamwork.
- Must possess leadership skills that include a commitment to employee development, fostering an environment of trust to encourage innovation, personal accountability, and giving and receiving feedback.
- Must demonstrate a strong customer service focus to foster cooperative relationships both internally and externally.
- Adept at handling sensitive and confidential information.
Typical Work Conditions:
- Work is performed in an office and / or remote environment (40%) based on manager discretion.
- Extensive time sitting in front of a screen and using a keyboard.
- May work additional hours as needed.
- Use of personal devices (cell phone, personal computer, etc) may be necessary on occasion to maintain business operations.
Typical Physical Demands:
- Regular use of hands to manipulate office tools and equipment, phones and computer keyboard.
- May lift and move office supplies up to 20 pounds.
- May stand, reach with hands and arms, stoop, and squat to file.
- Sit for extended periods of time.
- See to read a variety of materials.
- Hear and speak to exchange information.
We are pleased to offer a competitive salary of $80,000 - $90,000/year commensurate with experience and ability. The position includes a full benefit package such as paid time off, medical, dental and life insurance, and employer contribution to retirement plan.
