Control Room Operator

The Linden Generation Station is an 800 MW natural gas/butane gas fired combined cycle co-generation plant located at Railroad and Chemical Avenues within the Phillips 66 refinery. The plant consists of five gas turbine generators exhausting into five triple pressure Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSG’s). The HRSG's are connected to a common steam header which supplies steam to three steam turbines and the adjacent refinery.

Opportunity Summary

The Control Room Operator (CRO) is responsible for operating and monitoring the plant from the Control Room. The CRO responds to alarms by taking appropriate corrective actions as directed by the Shift Supervisor. The CRO ensures that the plant meets specified generating requirements while operating in a safe and efficient manner.

Primary Duties

• Respond to the operating directions of the Shift Supervisor.
• Ensure that the plant is running within design limits whenever possible.
• Report upset conditions or other anomalies in plant status to the Shift Supervisor.
• Perform routine inspections and assigned tasks as directed to support eh site Discharge Prevention, Containment and Countermeasures (DPCC) Plan as well as handle hazardous materials and wastes in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.
• Clear all alarms by taking appropriate actions, and initiate start-up and/or shut-down procedures as directed by the Shift Supervisor.
• Make entries in the Operating Log, as required.
• Assist in the training of new operators, as required.
• Operate DCS control panels to regulate the load on the HRSG and turbines and to maintain proper steam temperature and pressure, feed-water and fuel supply and efficient combustion conditions.
• Start-up turbine-generator units in accordance with operating instructions and procedures.
• Synchronize generators and regulate load, voltage and frequency.
• Perform switching operations by remote control, as directed, to maintain continuity of service.

Working Relationships

The CRO reports to the Shift Supervisor. The CRO cooperates with, and responds to suggestions from, the Operations Lead Supervisor. The CRO gives direction to subordinate Assistant Plant Operators.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing, and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g. hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.

Fitness for Duty

All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening. 

Work Schedule

This position offers a 12 hour rotating Dupont schedule. Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, workload and plant conditions. "On call" status will periodically be required.

Compensation

Initial compensation will start at either $41.40 or $46.58 per hour, depending on qualifications.

Job Qualifications

• Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment as would be acquired in four years of high school is required. An Associate Degree in a technical field is desirable.
• Must hold a New Jersey Blue Seal license or have the ability to obtain within one year of hire
• Must be able to obtain a TWIC card
• Extensive working knowledge of power plant industry desirable
• Experience as a Control Room Operator or equivalent position in an operating or generating plant. Experience in the direct operation of a combined cycle large frame gas turbine power plant preferred.
• Experience in water chemistry control, water condition analysis, water treatment facility operations and chemical handling requirements is desired
• Theoretical and practical knowledge of combustion/steam turbine operations, closed system generation, industrial safety, hazardous waste management and inspection/recording of plant parameters is highly desirable
• Experience with piping and instrument schematics and process controls desirable
• Experience reading and interpreting DCS logic
• Must have excellent organizational, oral and written communication skills
• Must possess and maintain a valid Drivers License at all times
