A Consulting Engineer specializing in Digital Instrumentation and Controls (I&C) is needed to support major projects for Surry Power Station. The Digital I&C project is a 10+ year effort as part of Subsequent License Renewal (SLR) to upgrade safety and non-safety-related analog systems to digital and transform the main control room to flat panel displays and controls. This role works with a cross-functional team of station stakeholders, project leads, and project managers to evaluate modifications to the plant design. Responsibilities include,
- Reviewing and/or preparing engineering products (e.g., Design / Engineering Change packages, Specifications, Calculations, Technical Evaluations.)
- Overseeing contracted engineering work and ensuring consistency and compliance with Dominion Energy and industry standards.
- Providing technical support, input, and oversight for Factory and Site Acceptance Testing and Simulations (e.g., reviewing and approving procedures and observing activities).
- Interfacing with the primary equipment supplier and project stakeholders to support technical reviews and input.
- Analyzing engineering risk and failure modes and incorporating mitigating strategies in the designs.
- Reporting and presenting status to engineering team lead, project managers, and management team on a periodic basis.
- Supporting construction / implementation phase (e.g., design updates, field change evaluations, resolution of technical issues).
This position provides multi-discipline engineering teams with strong technical and project leadership within a discipline, engineering section or for major engineering projects. Possesses and applies advanced knowledge and technical skills to solve complex engineering problems, or to plan and coordinate larger scale engineering projects or varied assignments requiring diverse knowledge of engineering principles and practices. Provides expert technical consultation and assessment on engineering problems and projects to engineering personnel. Serves as a management consultant on complex engineering problems and issues. Controls technical, financial and service commitments to internal or external customers. May perform independent research to find innovative and cost effective engineering solutions to operational problems.
The knowledge, skills, abilities and experience that are required for entry into this job include the following:
Applicants must have a Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited institution plus a minimum of 10 years of Instrument & Controls (digital and/or analog) systems design and maintenance experience.
3 years of engineering projects experience with I&C systems
In-depth knowledge of engineering theories, principles and practices to a broad variety of assignments and related field
Knowledge of business/financial and contractual matters
Recognized expert by other engineers and management
Provides expert technical consultation to other engineers and management
Skilled in the use of advanced engineering techniques
Strong planning and project management skills
Strong technical and organizational leadership skills
Strong oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing)
In depth knowledge of various computer applications, with the ability to manipulate personal computer applications and perform engineering calculations using applicable software programs (e.g. Matlab, Excel, etc.)
Proven decision making skills
Ability to think analytically and solve complex problems
Ability to interpret codes, regulations and practices
Ability to process information quickly and effectively manage multiple tasks
Equally effective working independently or in team environment
Willing to get into the field and perform walkdowns, project management activities and support of testing and troubleshooting of plant modifications

Digital I&C design experience
Requirements traceability experience
Professional Engineer (PE), Senior Reactor Operator (SRO) or Shift Technical Advisor (STA) certifications
Previously qualified or ability to qualify in the INPO Standard Design Process, Standard Digital Process (NISP-EN-04 or EPRI Digital Engineering Guide), Calculations, Specifications, Human Factors, and Engineering Technical Evaluations.
Previous 10 CFR 50.59 training or qualification.
REQUIRED ENGINEERING CRITERIA:
For placement of a candidate in a Consulting Engineer title, the following criteria must be met:
Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an ABET accredited Engineering program based on the year that the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own Engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or
Possess a 4-year degree in Engineering (non-ABET accredited), Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate Engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same Engineering discipline is ABET-accredited based on the year the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.
