Description
Performs intermediate skilled technical work inspecting construction projects for specification compliance, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Construction Inspector Supervisor.

- Inspects streets, structures, storm drains, ditches, ornamental fencing and street cleaning.
- Receives and responds to inquiries and complaints from citizens.
- Maintains inspection records, logs, invoices, construction activities.
- Informs contractor of deviations or errors as advises as to corrective actions.
- Takes samples of materials for testing of quality; performs site visits and conducts tests in field; maintains records of all test results.
- Investigates encroachments and assists in solving problems.
- Locates City owned utility improvements and ensures against damage to them by contractor.
- May assist in obtaining right-of-way for City's dirt street program.
- Inspects street cuts made for utility purposes.
- Inspects material received by contractors at project site to determine whether or not it meets the required specifications;
- On City or State contracts, uses records to make a monthly payment to prime contractor.
- Ensures the safety practices of contractors.
- Works with and provides information to City officials.
- Assists other Public Works departments with projects and resolving citizen complaints.
Typical Qualifications
Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED supplemented by college level courses in sub-professional engineering or construction work, considerable experience working in construction, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: General knowledge of construction practices, techniques, materials and equipment relating to Public Works and Utilities; general knowledge of engineering plans, specifications and drawings; ability to read and interpret plans, specifications and blueprints and to compare them with various aspects of construction in progress; knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and position specific software applications; ability to detect errors in construction projects; ability to establish
effective working relationships with City officials, contractors, property owners and others to effect satisfactory compliance with specifications and standards; ability to maintain accurate records.
Physical Requirements: This work requires the regular exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions and frequently walking, sitting and tasting or smelling; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather) and exposure to vibration; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
