The Department of Innovation & Technology (DoIT) is seeking an enthusiastic Computer Support Technician with strong technical and customer service skills to image computers and prepare equipment for deployments. This position performs drive sanitation preparing equipment for surplus, participates with senior analysts in the configuration, testing, installation, documentation and maintenance of desktop/laptop systems and related peripheral systems, and assists higher level staff in conducting training sessions for end users and staff. Job Responsibilities
30% Under immediate supervision, serves as a Computer Support Technician in the End User Computing section for the Department of Innovation & Technology (DoIT):
  • Assists in providing professional support and assistance to end users of multiple State of Illinois agencies, boards, and commissions.
  • Participates with senior analysts in the configuration of personal computing devices utilizing Microsoft Windows and Mac operating systems, Microsoft Office Automation products, network communication concepts and principles including knowledge of client network configurations, routing protocols, Virtual Private Network and Internet and computer programming and/or scripting.
  • Assists with applying images and loading customer specific applications and software to personal computer equipment in accordance with prescribed procedures and content utilizing Automated Software Deployment tools such as Microsoft Windows/Microsoft Installer scripts, System Center Configuration Manager, and Microsoft Deployment Tool Kit.
  • Assists with drive sanitization - software wiping drives and shredding drives in accordance with prescribed policies and procedures for destruction and documentation.
  • Performs quality assurance reviews to ensure compliance with enterprise security standards, performance requirements and content designations.
  • Notifies immediate supervisor and EUC Personal Computer Operations teams of discrepancies.

25% Assists with transfers of equipment from DoIT warehouse to staging operations area for imaging:
  • Validates equipment received against IT Service Management ticketing system documents.
  • Documents receipt of equipment in designated site logs.
  • Notifies immediate supervisor and EUC Service Management of discrepancies.
  • Pulls and sorts equipment in accordance with customer order priorities.
  • Electronically scans selected PC equipment and creates equipment pick list.
  • Transfers equipment from bulk storage area to imaging area and attaches equipment tracking form.
  • Packages customer orders for transport.
  • Returns personal computer equipment to original packaging.
  • Palletizes equipment to ensure stable transport and transfers palletized equipment to designated transport area.

15% Monitors EUC deployment schedule for impending device imaging demand:
  • Accesses ticketing systems to view PC equipment delivery, outbound transport and deployment dates, and to input completion date to reflect imaging completion of customer order.
  • Updates/maintains staging operations schedule on the deployment schedule to reflect imaging priority/sequence for customer orders.
  • Updates deployment schedule imaging status.

15% Assists and participates with senior technicians in multi-device/personal computer installations or relocations:
  • Conducts on-site desktop/laptop installations and assists experienced systems analysts in software distribution at user provided facilities using application software installation scripts, procedures, and programs.
  • Updates designated service management systems and documentation.

10% Keeps abreast of new developments in the Information Technology (IT) field:
  • Continues education by attending meetings, training sessions, seminars and conferences to increase familiarity with and maintain current on IT products, vendors, techniques and procedures.
  • Attends demonstrations and exhibitions related to assigned operations.

5% Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Minimum Qualifications:
  1. Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of two (2) years of college with course work in computer science or directly related fields.OR
  2. Requires satisfactory completion of an agency sponsored training program.

Preferred Qualifications (In Order of Significance):
  1. Elementary knowledge of supporting and troubleshooting Microsoft Windows or Mac operating systems.
  2. Elementary knowledge of Automated Software Deployment tools such as Microsoft Windows/Microsoft Installer scripts, System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) or LiteTouch.
  3. Elementary knowledge in constructing and maintaining a network and devices within a business infrastructure environment.
  4. Elementary knowledge of Microsoft Office client software products.

7. Requires the ability to lift and carry objects or equipment weighing up to 30 pounds. This position is considered medium work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567©). Medium work involves lifting no more than 50 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
