The University Corporation at Monterey Bay is a non-profit institution that is related and affiliated with the California State University, Monterey Bay. The University Corporation at Monterey Bay is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) public benefits corporation that is a recognized auxiliary organization of California State University and was established in July 1994. The University Corporation's mission is to further the educational purposes of the University. The University Corporation at Monterey Bay is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to building a pluralistic university by hiring personnel with competencies and experience related to the regional and State Population. The University Corporation at Monterey is committed to a standard of excellence in the services it provides and in the quality of work expected of its employees.
DEPARTMENT/PROGRAM SUMMARY
The Computing Talent Initiative (CTI), an institute in CSUMB's College of Science, is committed to its vision of ensuring that every California college student who is interested in studying Computer Science has access to a clear pathway that will lead them from where they are to a career in the tech industry.
CTI does this by building and implementing materials, pathways, and supports that prepare Computer Science students, particularly students from low-income, first-generation, URM backgrounds, to be competitive for opportunities in the technology workforce. A significant part of CTI's strategy is to work with tech companies, nonprofits, and other institutions of higher education to meet its objectives.
CTI is a small team ( ~9 people) who are focused on achieving the grant goals, mission and vision. This makes for a dynamic, no-two-days-are-the-same type environment, which does require members of the team to be flexible and comfortable taking on a broad range of tasks.
As a team, CTI has identified these guiding principles that drive the operation:
  • Ownership - You own outcomes and relentlessly pursue the mission.
  • Iteration - You are focused on constantly learning and improving.
  • Execution - You do the basics extremely well and believe implementation is as important as (if not more important than) ideas.
  • Transparency - You build trust by allowing others to hold you accountable.

POSITION SUMMARY
The CTI team coined the term 'Learning Engineer' to emphasize that the person in this position will actively build and implement systems, content, activities, and interventions that will enable student learning. This person's primary focus will be ensuring that the students they work with are prepared to compete for opportunities in the tech workforce. To do their job, this person will need to develop a deep understanding of where students are in their knowledge and preparedness, empathize with students' circumstances, challenges, and limitations, maintain high expectations for student progress, and inspire students to persist through their learning. The Learning Engineer will go beyond passive production of curriculum material, playing a significant role in inspiring, nudging and holding students accountable for their learning and engagement with the content.
The Learning Engineer will be interested in current best practices in learning science and in testing those ideas in a real-world setting to generate more knowledge about learning systems. This person will make significant contributions to innovative educational models and solutions, not constrained by current approaches/thinking in higher education, that address various challenges including the high cost of college education, broadening participation in computing, and the incorporation of 21st century skills into higher education.
The position is designated as hybrid, with the expectation that the Program Coordinator will be on campus at least 10-20% of the time to complete tasks that can only be done effectively in-person, i.e. building productive relationships with staff and students in-person, etc. The frequency and duration of the campus visit schedule can be designed in consultation with the CTI director.
