The Illinois Office of Comptroller is seeking applicants for the position of Computer Operations Specialist - Information Technology - Operations 2nd Shift.


The Comptroller is the chief fiscal control officer for Illinois government, charged by the Constitution with maintaining the state’s central fiscal accounts and ordering payments into and out of the appropriate funds. The office processes more than 16 million transactions annually and serves as a “fiscal watchdog” to ensure that all state payments meet the requirements of the law. The Comptroller’s office provides meaningful and timely fiscal information to help state policymakers adopt effective policies. The office continually seeks new ways to improve how it serves the public. The Comptroller has updated and streamlined the Comptroller’s website and has led the process of updating the state’s payroll and accounting systems. Comptroller Mendoza is committed to running the Office of Comptroller as a financial watchdog for the interest of Illinois citizens and to installing the most modern and transparent systems to make the state’s financial information available to all.


MAJOR FUNCTION: Under general supervision of the Public Service Administrator, the Computer Operations Specialist performs a variety of complex technical functions related to the control and operations in a large host data processing installation utilizing a multi-processing host mainframe computer, midrange system, and computerized laser printers during the second shift (3:30pm - Midnight). The incumbent verifies validity and accuracy of input/output data and assists other operators in resolving computer and data errors.

Job Responsibilities

  • Monitors mainframe system console and Zeke scheduler and responds to system generated messages, work center prompts, aborts, and hardware malfunctions.
  • Operates laser printer, evaluating errors and setting up restarts, and scans reports to ensure accuracy and quality.
  • Assists in monitoring, guiding, and training other operators depending upon system expertise; provides input for improving operating techniques and procedures.
  • Analyzes current operating procedures and standards for ways to improve efficiency.
  • Performs other related duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties defined above.


Minimum Qualifications

Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of two (2) years of college including course work in the computer science field supplemented by one (1) year of related experience, or any equivalent combination of training and experience.


Preferred Qualificatins

  • One (1) year of experience with MS Active Directory, MS Office, MS Visio, MS Project, and Windows server operating systems.
  • Experience with systems administration and support including testing, configuring, implementation, and maintenance.
  • Experience installing and programming scripts.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Requires ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Requires extensive knowledge of office procedures, methods, practices, and application.
  • Requires ability to follow and understand complex written and oral instructions.
  • Requires ability to develop satisfactory working relationships with employees and the general public.
  • Requires ability to apply logic and reasoning to computer system operations problems.
  • Requires ability to maintain concentration for extended periods of time despite distractions.
  • May require extensive knowledge of vendor supplied microsystems software and operating systems.
  • May require extensive knowledge of programming procedures and techniques.

This position is eligible to be a member of the State of Illinois Group Insurance program which includes health, dental, vision, and life insurance coverage options. Additionally, this position will annually accrue 12 paid sick days, a minimum of 12 paid vacation days, 4 paid personal days, and be afforded up to 14 paid state holidays, prorated based on start date.
