The Position
Essential functions of the job include, but are not limited to, the following:
Receives, collects, and logs in all incoming evidence, safekeeping, and found items from evidence lockers. These items may include firearms, other weapons, money, jewelry, sexual assault kits, blood, DNA, chemicals, toxic substances, computers, hazardous materials, narcotics, and a wide variety of other items.
Verifies evidence and accuracy of reports.
Ensures preservation of the chain of custody by storing all items received and collected in a systematic manner.
Releases property to rightful owners and authorized persons in accordance with applicable state laws and departmental procedures.
Maintains detailed records and files on each transaction and final disposition on all evidence and property received and released.
Prepares evidence for transport to crime laboratory.
Enters, modifies, and retrieves data.
Prepares, maintains, files, and retrieves a variety of forms and records.
Coordinates the release of evidence to investigative, forensic, and other personnel for testing and investigation.
Conducts periodic inventory. Identifies and prepares items to be auctioned, destroyed, and/or released.
Prepares, verifies, and transports cash deposits to the City Treasurer’s Office, while ensuring all associated paperwork is accurate and the disposition of the cash is recorded appropriately.
Destroys narcotics and other property according to applicable law.
Responds to questions from officers and the public over the telephone and in person regarding property in custody.
Notifies rightful owners of found property.
May be required to testify in court.
May drive on City business as necessary.
Assumes responsibility for ensuring the duties of this position are performed in a safe, efficient manner.
Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation requires.

Education/Training
Graduation from high school or attainment of GED or CHSPE certificate.
License(s)/Certification(s)
Valid California Class C driver's license.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Any City of Glendale employee who meets the minimum qualifications for this position, has completed probation or six months of City employment, and is occupying a permanent full-time classification on file in the Human Resources Department. Hourly City employees may be considered, provided that they furnish proof of continuous employment immediately preceding the final filing date, which would equal a minimum of six months of full-time service or 1040 part-time hours. (Civil Service Rule VIII 4-E).

Selection Process
EVALUATION OF APPLICATION: Submitted Application will be reviewed to ensure applicants meet the minimum requirements. All qualifying applicants will be invited to participate in the selection process.
PRELIMINARY BACKGROUND QUESTIONAIRE: (PASS/FAIL) To determine whether the candidate meets the background investigation standards of the Glendale Police Department.
WRITTEN EXAM: (PASS/FAIL) To evaluate the candidate’s ability to be successful in this position. Exam will be relevant to the duties of this position.
ORAL INTERVIEW: (Weight of 100%) To evaluate the applicant's experience, education, and personal fitness for the position.
BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION: A comprehensive background investigation will be conducted on all finalists, which will review and verify personal history including, but not limited to financial responsibility, criminal history, drug use history, driving record, and verification of application materials. Significant issues or omissions in the above-stated areas may be grounds for disqualification. Background investigation will include a polygraph and Livescan fingerprinting. TIME AND PLACE OF THE EXAMINATION WILL BE ANNOUNCED. The City of Glendale reserves the right to modify the above stated examination components and/or weights. Should this be necessary, the candidates will be notified of the specific examination components and weights prior to the administration of any examination.
