Job Description
The Community Schools Coordinator will work with students from 6th to 8th grade at Buck Lodge Middle School in Prince George’s County. The coordinator’s role is to support students in the areas of academic, enrichment and wellness. The Community Schools Coordinator will work closely with the school principal and personnel to ensure that students work towards academic goals. An integral part of this work will be the engagement of the parents and community at large. This person will work at the MMYC office in Riverdale Maryland and at Buck Lodge Middle School.

LAYC/MMYC’s mission is to empower a diverse population of youth to achieve a successful transition to adulthood, through multicultural, comprehensive, and innovative programs that address youths' social, academic, and career needs. To achieve that mission, LAYC/MMYC provides services and opportunities to approximately 5,000 individuals annually to support academic achievement, promote healthy behaviors, and guide youth toward successful adulthood. LAYC/MMYC also conducts advocacy and public policy work to broaden opportunities for youth.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Work with the principal and school faculty to identify ways to support students in their academic achievement, wellness, and enrichment goals and implement these supports.
- Participate in the identification, planning and directing of activities focused on wellness and physical activity goals.
- Assist Education Programs Manager with grants and reporting requirements in a timely fashion.
- Establishes and maintains relationships with stakeholders and community partners including but not limited to schools, non-profit organizations, and private business
- Initiate and participate in recommendations on supplemental instruction or tutorials.
- Recruit the support of other organizations that can provide food, clothing or medical resources to students and families.
- Create and update outreach materials such as brochures, flyers and newsletters.
- Ensures documentation of all contacts with youth, family, members, LAYC staff and representatives of other agencies involved in the provision of services.
- Schedule and attend Academic Interventions when requested.
- Conduct workshops for students and parents in areas such as Financial Literacy, Life Skills, Job Readiness Trainings, Health & Fitness, College Readiness and more.
- Reach out to parents to engage them in their child’s educational goals.
- Monitor students’ participation and progress through school data analysis, entering data into LAYC’s ETO database and assisting with reporting requirements.
- Assist in supervising and managing contracted teachers, tutors and AmeriCorps members.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s degree and two plus years of youth development experience
- Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Knowledge of community and local resources.
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) required.
- Commitment to confidentiality
- Excellent problem solving and organizational skills.
- Excellent time management and ability to multi-task and prioritize in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel
- The willingness and desire to work independently, as well as collaboratively, and to take on additional responsibilities.
- A positive attitude and an earnest interest in providing good customer service to our clients.
- Flexible schedule, including occasional evenings for school events.
- Obtain CPR and First Aid certifications.
- Complete random drug test on a yearly basis
- Valid driver’s license
- Complete criminal and child abuse/neglect clearances.
- LAYC/MMYC requires the COVID-19 vaccine of all its employees. You will be asked to provide proof of vaccination at the time of your interview and at your onboarding.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This is largely a sedentary position that requires the ability to speak, hear, see, and lift small objects up to 10 lbs. May require the ability to travel locally and/or regionally.
