The Biomedical Research Core Facilities (BRCF), part of the Medical School Office of Research, provide technology and services to 10,000+ faculty and staff involved in biomedical research across the entire U-M campus. We offer centralized access to state-of-the-art instrumentation and expertise, while at the same time helping our research enterprise avoid duplication of expense and effort. Core staff are recognized experts in their fields and active collaborators contributing to the groundbreaking innovations produced by U-M researchers.
We are looking for a highly collaborative and skilled marketing professional to be a part of our communications team and support the BRCF.

Responsibilities*
The Communications Manager will develop and implement communications supporting the resources and services of the cores and central administrative functions of the BRCF. A successful candidate will have a business-to-business communications background and be a skilled writer, conveying business operations priorities and policies, as well as complex scientific topics, to researchers at the Medical School, across central campus, and to outside industry. The Communications Manager must be a skilled project manager and a self-starter when it comes to using current multimedia, web, and design tools.
  • Overarching responsibilities include:
    • Content creation and digital implementation, including the development and timely
      distribution of enewletters; website content creation and management; and distribution
      of one-off email announcements.
    • Event project management and marketing for the cores, including planning, creation,
      and execution of training sessions, outreach, and awareness events.
    • Leadership communications, including the development of strategic messaging for both
      core directors and central administration leaders. Occasional message development for
      strategic partners in areas impacting supported units.
  • Content Creation and Digital Implementation
    • Write and produce customer-driven communications regarding business operations, as
      well as successes and opportunities. Compose narratives that demonstrate the value
      and innovation of the BRCF. Cascaded across digital and multimedia channels, driving
      awareness of services and expertise, key messages, and events.
    • Initiate new and/or improve existing communication channels to maximize impact and
      increase customer acquisition.
    • Create and maintain web content for BRCF cores that clearly communicates
      product/service functions and benefits, helps build relationships with customers, and
      encourages collaboration.
    • Ensure all communications consistently convey organizational messaging and adhere to
      Michigan Medicine and U-M brand and style guidelines.
    • Provide all web strategy and content oversight for the BRCF website in collaboration
      with the Michigan Medicine Digital/Web team.
    • Play an active role in the cross-functional marketing support of Medical School
      marketing and provided by the OoR marketing team for the entire Office of Research
      and the strategies of the research enterprise.
  • Leadership Communication Support
    • Support leadership objectives through the development and execution of
      comprehensive communication plans.
    • Compose and distribute customer messaging for core directors and central
      administration leaders that engages customers and supports BRCF and Office of
      Research strategies.
    • Collaborate with outside departments and units to inform customers of workflow
      and/or policy changes, including platform migrations.
    • Develop and maintain knowledge of BRCF, Office of Research, and Medical School
      missions, goals, and business objectives to ensure alignment with communication
      needs.
  • Event Support and Project Management
    • Work with cores and leadership to offer training, outreach, and awareness events that
      support business operations, scientific output, and strategic objectives.
    • Assist with development of event topics and PowerPoint presentations.
    • Provide event marketing materials cascaded across unit/department channels and
      create and event website presence.
    • Offer registration and day-of event/webinar support.
  • Strategic, Independent Decision Making
    • Develop, implement, evaluate, and/or provide guidance on high-level marketing
      communication strategies.
    • Make independent decisions comparing and evaluating both short-term and long-term
      communication needs to effectively promote BRCF goals and objectives.
    • Recommend appropriate course of action for reaching target audiences and effectively
      conveying messages.
    • Provide input for yearly marketing budget, as well as tracking throughout the year.
    • Implement tactical plans that support BRCF/Office of Research/Medical School larger
      strategic plans.
    • Collaborate with communication peers across the Medical School and central campus,
      developing best practices and finding potential synergies.
    • Discover and adopt new technologies and processes that benefit the BRCF/Office of
      Research/Medical School.

Required Qualifications*
  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, design, or related field with a minimum of five years of experience in a professional communications position
  • Proficient on a PC and Mac
  • Well-versed in digital programs and software:
  • Microsoft 365 (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat), CMS (Drupal or Wordpress, Sharepoint), Google Analytics, marketing automation platform (Constant Contact, MailChimp, or equivalent)

Background Screening
Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
