Job description

ERM is hiring Communications Consultants in Merrillville, Indiana. This role is critical to the success of energy infrastructure construction. This is a position that engages directly with clients, consultants, and community members on a regular basis. The Communications Consultant will assist the Client Communications Lead with development of project communications (web, digital, and print materials),  coordination of material production and placement, and leading the engagement and facilitation of meetings with local municipal authorities and other stakeholders with interest in energy infrastructure projects planned for the region.

The Consultant will work as a member of the client’s communications team and is expected to work on-site at corporate office(s) and attend meetings with stakeholders at off-site locations with flexibility to work remotely as desktop activity allows (schedule and expectations to be coordinated and approved by the client).  This individual will serve as a subject matter expert and representative of the client communications team while participating in client project team meetings and meetings with external stakeholders.

The Consultant should independently troubleshoot issues as they arise and act as a resource for client project team members; all in an effort to communicate project details in a timely manner and resolve conflict that may result during permitting and construction.

The Consultant will attend regular meetings with communications and project team members, as well as other specialty groups, as a means to understand project details, determine potential community impacts/concerns, and identify key topics for landowner, community and stakeholder communications. This is a full-time (40 hours/week) contractual hybrid (on-site and remote) limited-term role for the duration of 12 months, extendable.

Responsibilities

  • Attend regular project team meetings and track resulting next steps and responsibilities; communicate needs with client communications lead and/or ERM team lead.

  • Write project communications materials (fact sheets, door hangers, notification letters, web copy, digital ad copy, etc.).

  • Coordinate material production and digital media placement with relevant vendors.

  • Coordinate with the project team, communications team and public affairs staff to confirm stakeholder and community interests, communications topics and local stakeholder meeting needs.

  • Assist in the implementation of various, already developed public outreach campaigns – safety, trail closures, hunting restrictions, etc.

  • At the direction/request of the communications team, conduct ongoing and consistent outreach with identified staff at localities, counties, emergency response agencies and other identified stakeholders regarding project activities.

  • Supplement or provide support to project team staff on request.

  • Document and report all interactions with stakeholders and landowners and submit weekly reports.

  • Provide real-time updates to the communications team as issues arise.

Requirements:

  • Minimum three years of relevant experience and demonstrated knowledge of project and/or corporate communications, public affairs, community relations, and local government relations.

  • Bachelors Degree in communications, public affairs or similar educational and/or relevant field experience.

  • Excellent writing and public speaking skills.

  • Ability to work autonomously to manage competing priorities, synthesize ideas, plan strategically and implement actions.

  • Familiarity or experience with energy infrastructure permitting and construction process.

  • Commitment to ERM values.

  • Effective and collaborative team player.

  • Previous experience with energy company or client preferable.

  • Must be available to work traditional 8/9 a.m. to 4/5 p.m. schedule with flexibility to attend early and late meetings with external stakeholder groups, as required.

  • Must be available to work an average of 40 hours a week.

  • Must be able to travel and have reliable transportation and cell phone.
