The Collections Manager is the primary staff member charged with maintaining the Brazoria County Historical Museum’s collections and the records that document them. The Collections Manager works with Museum staff and volunteers as well as other professionals to ensure that the Museum’s collections are properly documented, stored, and displayed in the Museum itself or on loan to another institution. The Collections Manager plays an important role in establishing and achieving goals to improve the care and preservation of and access to the Museum’s collections and may be called upon to lead projects in these areas, such as with emergency preparedness and building security.
M-F, 8a – 5p and additional hours as needed

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:


  • Manages the Museum’s three-dimensional artifact collection as well as items on loan to and from the Museum; performs acquisition, accession, registration, and storage of collection items. Maintains the collections management database (currently, Past Perfect) and object files.
  • Provides basic conservation, preservation, and security of collection items by monitoring the museum’s environmental controls, fire protection system, and security system and related reports.
  • Creates digital records and digital copies of the artifact collections as well as maintains all records related to collection items.
  • Ensures the safe and proper handling and transportation of all incoming and outgoing loan items and associated paperwork.
  • Contributes to exhibition planning, installation, and take-down, especially promoting the use of items from the Museum’s collection as well as through loans from other institutions.
  • Assists with grant preparation and/or secures contributions in relation to the position’s responsibilities; recruits, trains, and supervises volunteers; participates in special Museum projects when necessary; and, serves as a liaison on behalf of the Museum when appropriate.
  • Responds to research questions and interacts with Museum visitors.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, Experience and Training Guidelines:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in museum studies, history or a closely related filed; AND at least three years’ experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources.
Knowledge of:


  • AAM Code of Ethics for Museums;
  • Past Perfect software preferred;
  • Nomenclature for museum;
  • Basic preservation and storage requirements;
  • Standard museum guidelines;
  • Calculating figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, precentages, are, circumference, and volume;
  • Applying concepts of basic algebra and geometry;
  • Modern office equipment;
  • Applicable local, state and Federal statutes, rules, codes and regulations;
  • Department policies, procedures and regulations covering specific areas of assignment.
Skill in:
  • Interpreting an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical, written, oral, schedule
  • or diagram form and dealing with several abstract and concrete variables;
  • reading, analyzing, and interpreting general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations;
  • Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing, in a tactful and courteous manner;
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with managers, supervisors, employees, external public agencies and organizations, vendors, suppliers, community organizations, and the general public;
  • Using initiative, discretion and decision making within established procedures, guidelines and rules;
  • Defining problems, collecting data, establishing facts and drawing valid conclusions;
  • Building effective work teams and providing positive, effective customer service;
  • Implementing and developing programs specific to the mission of this department;
  • Adjusting to constantly changing projects and prioritizing job tasks;
  • Maintaining excellent organization;
  • Performing work in a safe and timely manner using mature, independent judgement;
  • Operating a personal computer and various department used software applications.

LICENSE & CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Valid Texas Driver’s License.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Work is typically performed in an office work environment and museum. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. May be required to lift and carry items weighing up to 25 pounds. Exposure to communicable diseases is possible. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
