Job Summary:
Analyzes and abstracts health information to assign medical codes. Identifies relevant diagnoses and procedures to accurately reflect the health care services provided. Assists in capturing medical data that are complete, accurate and compliant for the purpose of reimbursement, research and compliance.
Job Requirements:
Education and Work Experience:
  • High School Education/GED or equivalent: Preferred
  • Associate's/Technical Degree or equivalent combination of education/related experience: Preferred
  • Experience in an acute care hospital setting: Preferred

Licenses/Certifications:
  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCA) or enrollment in an AHIMA approved Coding Education Course: Required
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC) (Critical Access Sites Only): Preferred
  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS): Preferred

Essential Functions:
  • Performs necessary chart abstracting to ensure completion of necessary fields prior to coding access. Validates attending and consulting physician abstract. Validates dates and charges to ensure they match actual services perfumed.
  • Reviews Charge Viewer to validate charges, modifiers, and supply charges. Validates bogus codes and E/M levels prior to coding access. Reviews, identifies and completes charge corrections prior to review by coder. Works with corresponding departments to resolve identified issues prior to coding.
  • Follows coding guidelines and legal requirements to ensure compliance with federal and state regulatory bodies.
  • Collaborates to provide coding feedback and education to departmental leadership regarding completeness and accurateness of documentation and physician coding practices. Acts as a liaison between patients, providers, and payers.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
