The City of San Bernardino is seeking a self starter able to work in a fast-paced environment performing routine field inspection activities of private property to ensure compliance with municipal codes covering property maintenance, substandard housing, and public nuisance. The Code Enforcement Officer I will apply and explain applicable municipal codes and regulations, and address violations where disclosed.
This recruitment will be used to fill two (2) vacancies in the Community & Economic Development Department, and establish a list to fill future vacancies.The Position:
Code Enforcement Officers are required to work weekends, evenings, and occasionally holidays. The work schedule is subject to change to meet department needs. Officers work in the office and field environment and are required to travel to sites to conduct inspections. Essential functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting, walking or standing for prolonged periods of time; climbing; bending; twisting; exercising full range of motion of the arms, hands, wrists and fingers; occasional pushing/pulling; lifting; stooping; crouching; kneeling; speaking and hearing to exchange information; visual acuity to read and interpret specifications and drawings and conduct inspections.
The Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate will be detail oriented and have one (1) year of relevant field inspection in a governmental agency, enforcement experience, or report writing related to enforcement activity experience.

Education and Experience:
High School diploma or G.E.D.
AND
One (1) year of experience with relevant field inspection operations in a governmental agency; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Licenses, Certifications, and Equipment:
A valid State driver's license is required.
Successful completion of the PC 832 training course within one year of appointment to the classification.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment: The employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee is periodically exposed to wet conditions, vibration, airborne particles, mold, toxic or caustic chemicals, and unsanitary conditions. The noise level is occasionally loud. The employee is occasionally exposed to personal safety risks similar to emergency response positions. While performing the duties of this job, employees are regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; stand; talk and hear; walk; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; and lift or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee may be assigned to work weekends, evenings, and occasional holidays.
City Benefits:The City offers an attractive compensation and benefit package, that includes:
- Retirement - Participation in the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS). Tier I Employees hired before 10/3/11: CalPERS 2.7% at 55; Classic members with less than 6 months separation: CalPERS 2% at 55, single highest year plan. New members, CalPERS 2% at 62, three highest year average plan.
- Health Insurance - Monthly contribution of $715.00 (Employee Only), $1,289.00 (Employee plus one), or $1,724.00 (Employee plus Family) for health, dental and vision premiums. Eligible employees who waive all medical, dental, vision, supplemental life, and supplemental AD&D benefits will receive an annual "Health Insurance Waiver Stipend" of $3,500.00 every first paycheck of December.

- Vacation - 80 hours annually, accrued bi-weekly; available for use after one (1) year.
- Sick Leave - 96 hours annually, accrued bi-weekly; available for use after ninety (90) days.
- 13 holidays, plus 18 hours of floating holiday time.
