The Department of Pathology is seeking a Clinical Laboratory Scientific Specialist to provideTechnical expert and point of reference for the Clinical Flow Cytometry Lab. Assists the faculty, as directed, to identify and develop complex analytical procedures to address the needs in the management, design, and execution of Flow Cytometry testing, with responsibility for the completeness, accuracy, and adequacy of all aspects of clinical test development including testing methodology/instrument implementation particularly using BD instrumentation. This position will collaborate and work closely with the neighboring VA Flow Cytometry lab to ensure cohesiveness between the two separate testing facilities. Education/training new and current staff ensuring continuing education is maintained. This position will also collaborate with faculty to assist in teaching incoming pathology residents on basic and advance Flow Cytometry topics. This position is 100% time, Monday - Friday, 0800-1630.
Duties to include:
- Assist in the expansion of new flow cytometric testing by designing and executing lab developed tests as requested by faculty. This includes the associated validation studies, documentation of results, and the implementation resulting in new and refined clinical and research assays.
- Assist in the optimization of specimen collection, handling and processing for flow cytometric testing. Perform quantitative and qualitative analyses on clinical and research specimens.
- Serve as the technical expert for flow cytometric test result analysis, specific Flow Cytometry tasks, work processes and procedures performed in the Flow Cytometry laboratory.
- Communicate and disseminate technical information and procedure changes to Flow Cytometry staff.
- Translate research findings and apply new scientific/technical developments and theories to Clinical Laboratory testing, ensuring compliance with new and existing CAP and FDA regulations.
- Plan, prioritize, direct, and perform research and clinical work activities in the Flow Cytometry lab to ensure smooth and efficient operation.

Required Qualifications:
- A Master's degree or equivalent education and experience in a chemical, biological, Clinical Laboratory science or medical technology program from an accredited college/university is required.
- 5-7 years of laboratory experience in a clinical, research or core Flow Cytometry laboratory with expertise in operating and troubleshooting Flow Cytometry analyzers and equipment.
- Expert knowledge of multi-color Flow Cytometry panel design, validation studies and implementation.
- Experience with laboratory inspection and accreditation activities.
- Proficiency in basic computer software applications using MS Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), internet-based literature search and retrieval of information, and basic software applications used in Flow Cytometry analysis (example: Diva/ CytoPaint).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
- Demonstrated commitment to promoting a diverse environment.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Demonstrated expertise with technical and operational knowledge of flow cytometers.
- Certification as Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or specialist or specialist certification in Cytometry (QCYM) from American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or certification as a Certified Cytometrist from the International Cytometry Certification Examination (ICCE).
- Experience working with EPIC Beaker Laboratory Information System and BD Flow instrumentation.
- Experience working in an academic health care environment developing and delivering Flow Cytometry-based technical training.
- Experience in publishing peer reviewed academic papers on flow topics.
