Salary: T-10, $16.13 to $16.98 per hour, DOE
The successful candidate will receive a 2% increase to their base hourly pay rate once the state of Alaska qualification for paraprofessionals has been met and approved by ASD Talent Management.
Job Summary
The Classroom Tutor develops and provides tutoring services for individual children in schools. The position has a retirement association with the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).
Job Requirements
The following are required:
  1. A high school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Must meet paraprofessional requirements for the state of Alaska through one of the following methods: 48 college semester credits from a regionally accredited institution, OR a passing score of 459 or greater on the ETS Paraprofessional Assessment exam, OR passing the WorkKeys by ACT assessment, OR passing the ASD provided Master Teacher paraprofessional training.
  3. Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  4. Ability to maintain confidentiality and inspire confidence and cooperation of staff, parents, students, administrators, and the public.
  5. Ability to establish and maintain a professional relationship with staff, parents, students, administrators, and the public.

The following are preferred:
  1. Knowledge of first aid.
  2. College courses in education, language arts, and math.
  3. Experience working with children and families in transition.
  4. Successful experience as a tutor and/or volunteer experience with children.

Essential Job Functions
  1. Develops and implements tutorial services to include activities based on the academic needs identified by the child, child's teacher, and/or child's parents.
  2. Tutors children in the shelter, home, and/or at school for a minimum of 120 to 150 minutes a week.
  3. Works with the child advocate/project coordinator, school staff, and parents to determine individual student problems and needs, including but not limited to overall achievement levels in the subject areas, profiles of the student's strengths and weaknesses, and appropriate academic activities and materials for the child to use in the transitional living situation.
  4. Administers assessments as needed and work with specialists and/or school staff to interpret findings and determine program for students.
  5. Monitors student progress and maintains records of student growth, reporting progress to the classroom teacher and parents.
  6. Maintains accurate student records as required and submits monthly and other reports as requested.
  7. Attends meetings and training sessions as scheduled.
  8. Assists in the evaluation of instructional materials and contributes to decision making pertinent to the selection and purchase of materials for the tutoring program.
  9. Coordinates tutoring activities and student needs with the Child Advocate/Project.
  10. Coordinates to assure smooth functioning of the tutoring program.
  11. Maintains regular contact with parents, assisting them in understanding academic needs, understanding child development, and learning to work with their children.
  12. Maintains an accurate inventory of tutoring materials and equipment, updated annually.

Physical /Mental Demands
The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.

Work Environment
Work is performed in a professional environment with a wide variety of individuals having differing functions, personalities and abilities, including working with diverse groups of people in a variety of different settings.
While performing the duties of this job the employee may be regularly exposed to a video display. The employee may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
