SUMMARY:
This is a professional claims position within the Technical Services Unit. Core responsibilities include the investigation, negotiation, and resolution of third party settlements to maximize recoveries on behalf of MEM and its policyholders. Must be able to work independently, with minimal supervision, and within assigned authority.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Work closely with the Subrogation Unit Manager on the claim management of subrogation issues. These technical claim duties include the direct handling of assigned subrogation claims in accordance with company claims philosophy and quality assurance standards. Specific subrogation job duties include:
- Identify subrogation opportunities by monitoring workers compensation claims.
- Exercise proper judgment and decision making to analyze the claims exposure to determine the proper course of action and to appropriately settle the subrogation portion of the claim.
- Collaborate with the workers compensation adjuster in the investigation of third party liabilities by providing direction to ensure that a full investigation is completed to lock in subrogation rights.
- Conduct on-site subrogation investigations, consult with Claims Representatives, and hire experts, such as engineers and attorneys, as needed.
- Clearly communicate concise action plans and present plans for moving the case to conclusion.
- In accordance with company claims philosophies, statutory requirements, and quality assurance standards, negotiate and resolve third party matters to maximize subrogation recoveries and/or waivers on behalf of MEM and its policyholders.
- Negotiate and settle assigned subrogation claims within assigned authority.
- Consult with and provide information to underwriters, policyholders, and agents regarding subrogation issues, matters, and concerns.
- Act in accordance with MEM’s vision, mission and values. Performs other duties as may dictated by office/department/corporate circumstances.

Education/Experience: Bachelor’s Degree preferred; Three to five years of directly related liability claims work experience and work comp claims experience. Subrogation experience preferred.
Designations/Certifications: None required; however, industry-related certifications such as SCLA, CPCU and/or AIC designation are preferred.
LICENSES
- A valid driver’s license is required.
- Claim adjusting license is preferred, but not required.
- Appropriately licensed and/or certified in all states in which claims are being handled.
- Ability to read and comprehend basic/complex instructions given from written and oral sources.
- Ability to write basic/complex correspondence.
- Ability to effectively present information to top management, employees, the public.
- Ability to read, write, speak and comprehend English fluently.
- Ability to understand basic mathematical relationships and formulas.
- Ability to understand and employ basic/complex accounting mathematics.
- Ability to work with little or no supervision.
- Ability to use common sense techniques in solving problems.
- Ability to solve complex logical problems.
- Ability to use diplomacy and tact when dealing with problems.
- Ability to identify problems and determine the best course of action for their resolution.

- Strong organizational skills and ability to perform multiple tasks in a fast-paced learning environment
- Strong understanding of fundamentals of Workers Compensation insurance principles and practices.
- Computer experience with related claims and business software.
