Job Title: Civil Engineering Technician Intern
Location: Remote
Job Summary:
Apply your engineering studies as the Civil Engineering Technician Intern with Sealaska's team at the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) this summer!
The goal of the internship is to introduce you to a career in Civil Engineering with an emphasis on dam safety. You will learn the key components of a federal dam safety program and apply your skills and training in science and engineering to complete various tasks related to several of these components. Overall, the intern will receive a hands-on applied experience to complement your academic training.
Sealaska's subsidiary MBS works directly with the Branch of Safety of Dam at the BIA. The team administers dam safety activities on Native lands and coordinates with safety officers at BIA regional offices and local agencies. They perform hydrologic, hydraulic, and risk assessment analyses for the dams in our program, support development and exercises for Emergency Action Plans, support early warning systems at many program dams, and support comprehensive and periodic reviews for the program's dams.
Actual projects will be tailored to the interests and skills of the intern. Some example projects include:

  • Work with a lead engineer to support hydrology and hydraulic analyses.
  • Develop hazard levels for use within an Emergency Action Plan.
  • Work with a GIS Specialist to learn geospatial analysis skills to support engineering efforts or to develop maps for final reports.

This internship can take place remotely via telecommute. There may be opportunity to travel to the MBS/BIA office in Lakewood, Colorado or one of the reservations supporting by this work.
Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Learn about Civil Engineering career paths as it relates to dam safety.
  • Work with a lead engineer to support hydrology and hydraulic analyses.
  • Develop hazard levels for use within an Emergency Action Plan.
  • Work with a GIS Specialist to learn geospatial analysis skills to support engineering efforts or to develop maps for final reports.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Knowledge of engineering
  • Experience with spreadsheets
  • Interested in learning modeling and geographical information systems (GIS)
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Must be a Sealaska shareholder, descendant of a shareholder, or spouse of a shareholder
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States
  • Ability to travel as needed

Education and Experience:
  • Must be age 18 at time of hire
  • Must be currently enrolled in post-secondary school/program or a recent graduate (1-2 years)
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States

Preferred:
  • Skills related to basic computer programming (scripting), GIS, hydrology, hydraulics, or geospatial modeling of hydrologic/hydraulic and/or geologic/geotechnical systems.
  • At least a 2.5 GPA
  • Strong critical thinking and research skills
  • Self-starter with ability to adapt to a fast-paced work environment.

Work Environment:
