Throughout this Co-op experience, you will be immersed in a dynamic environment, collaborating on an array of projects spanning the Southeastern region. ICE is a full-service transportation consulting and design firm, distinguished by its extensive spectrum of expertise, encompassing disciplines such as highways, bridges and structures, hydrology and hydraulic design, geotechnical engineering, foundation testing, environmental documentation (NEPA), construction services, and aviation design.

Position Overview: As a Civil Engineering Co-op, you will play an integral role in our infrastructure projects by assisting the roadway and hydrologic/hydraulic design teams. This position offers a valuable opportunity to gain practical experience in Civil Engineering while working on projects that directly impact the development and maintenance of vital transportation and water management systems. You will also collaborate with EIT’s, PE’s, and Project Managers.

  • Gain experience with computer programs such as MicroStation, OpenRoads, GEOPAK Drainage, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, TR-20, FHWA Hydraulics Toolbox, HY8, etc.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with senior engineers and project managers to support the design and analysis of roadway projects, including alignment, pavement design, and signage/layout.
  • Assist in the preparation of detailed engineering plans, drawings, and specifications for roadways, intersections, and related infrastructure.
  • Contribute to the development of hydrologic and hydraulic models to assess stormwater drainage systems, culverts, and floodplain management.
  • Assist with the analysis of existing drainage systems, identification of design deficiencies, and proposal of effective solutions.
  • Participate in field visits to project sites to gather data, assess site conditions, and support the evaluation of project feasibility.
  • Utilize engineering software and tools to perform calculations, simulations, and design tasks related to roadway and hydraulic systems.
  • Contribute to technical reports, presentations, and documentation for internal teams, clients, and regulatory agencies.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure integrated and coordinated design approaches.
  • Stay updated on industry best practices, design codes, and standards related to roadway and hydrologic/hydraulic engineering.
Qualifications:
  • Strong interest in roadway design, stormwater management, and hydrologic/hydraulic engineering.
  • Relevant engineering software is desired, such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, HEC-RAS, and/or StormCAD.
  • Solid understanding of Civil Engineering principles and design standards.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal abilities for team collaboration.
  • Ability to work both independently and under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Eagerness to learn and contribute to real-world engineering projects.
  • Must be a US Resident or have a Greencard. This position is not open for H1B students.

Students should possess a combination of technical, analytical, and soft skills to excel in their field. The student applying for the Civil Engineer Co-op position focused on roadway and hydrologic/hydraulic design should possess a range of technical skills to effectively contribute to the projects. It's important to note that while having some of these skills beforehand is beneficial, a willingness to learn and adapt to new tools and techniques is equally important. As a Co-op student, the individual will likely receive on-the-job training and mentorship from experienced engineers to further develop these skills within the context of real-world projects.
Here are the key technical skills that the student should ideally have or be willing to learn:
  • AutoCAD and Civil 3D: Proficiency in using computer-aided design (CAD) software like AutoCAD and Civil 3D is essential for creating detailed engineering plans, cross-sections, profiles, and layouts for roadway and drainage systems.
  • Hydraulic and Hydrologic Modeling Software: Familiarity with hydraulic and hydrologic modeling software like HEC-RAS, StormCAD, or similar tools is crucial for analyzing stormwater drainage systems, floodplain management, and hydraulic structures.
  • Geotechnical Analysis: Basic understanding of geotechnical principles and tools for analyzing soil properties, slope stability, and foundation design related to roadway infrastructure.
  • Engineering Mathematics: Solid grasp of engineering mathematics, including calculations related to drainage flow rates, culvert sizing, pavement design, and hydraulic calculations.
  • GIS (Geographic Information Systems): Familiarity with GIS software can be beneficial for analyzing spatial data and understanding the geographical context of infrastructure projects.
  • Technical Drawing and Blueprint Reading: Ability to interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and engineering plans is important for accurately visualizing and implementing design concepts.
  • Materials and Specifications: Understanding of construction materials, specifications, and standards relevant to roadway and hydraulic projects.
  • Data Collection and Fieldwork: Skills in conducting field surveys, collecting data, and assessing site conditions to support design decisions.
  • Technical Writing: Ability to prepare technical reports, documentation, and presentations summarizing design analysis and recommendations.
  • Communication Tools: Proficiency in communication tools such as Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for documenting findings, creating presentations, and collaborating with teams.
  • Safety and Regulations: Understanding of safety regulations, construction codes, and standards related to roadways, drainage, and water management.
  • Project Management Tools: Familiarity with project management software for organizing tasks, timelines, and collaborating with project teams.
  • CAD/GIS Integration: Knowledge of integrating CAD data with GIS systems for geospatial analysis and visualization.
Work Environment
The position operates primarily in an office environment. Must be able to operate PC-based systems at a workstation for 8 hours per day and overtime if needed. May be required to lift heavy objects, excessive walking, driving, bending, and reaching, pointing, or directing objects or materials. Business Hours

Travel Requirements
The student will report to the Greenville office and will be required to travel to project sites as needed to perform fieldwork. Travel will predominately be to job sites in the Upstate but may include projects in the Southeast region.
