CIVIL ENGINEER I / Pay Range = $22.06 - $29.43 per hour

CIVIL ENGINEER II / Pay Range = $24.90 - $33.47 per hour

CIVIL ENGINEER III / Pay Range = $28.18 - $38.09 per hour

Multiple Positions Available

40 Hours per Week


The State of New Hampshire, Department of Transportation, Division of Project Development, Bureau of Highway Design, has multiple full-time vacancies for Civil Engineer I, II and III.

CIVIL ENGINEER I:

Summary: Performs entry-level CIVIL ENGINEER duties during assignment to seven bureaus within the DOT over an 18-month period which allows exposure to a variety of engineering disciplines.

CIVIL ENGINEER II

Summary: To perform basic engineering duties for a variety of engineering projects.

CIVIL ENGINEER III

Summary: To supervise and coordinate complex engineering activities for a group of highway projects in the Highway Design Bureau.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

CIVIL ENGINEER I:

Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited institute of higher education with a major study in engineering.

Experience: No experience required

OR

Education: Associate's degree from an accredited institute of higher education with a major study in engineering technology.

Experience: Two (2) years of post-graduate experience in an engineering field in a position comparable to an Engineering Technician.

License/Certification:

  • Must possess an Engineer-in-Training Certificate issued by the NH Office of Professional Licensure and Certification. (Bachelor's degree applicants not possessing an E.I.T. Certificate may be hired at a one-salary grade reduction.)
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and/or have access to transportation for statewide travel.
  • The applicant's Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must meet the minimum standards as established by the hiring agency.

RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS: Knowledge of the fundamentals of engineering including a working knowledge of advanced high school mathematics. Knowledge of surveying, material testing and elementary design. Skill in the use of surveying, material testing and drafting instruments and calculators. Ability to make simple drawings, tracings and technical calculations. Ability to perform simple laboratory tests and assume inspection responsibilities. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with officials, members of the public and other employees. Must be willing to maintain appearance appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency appointing authority.

CIVIL ENGINEER II:

Education: Master's degree from an accredited institute of higher education with a major study in engineering.

Experience: No experience required.

OR

Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited institute of higher education with a major study in engineering.

Experience: Eighteen (18) months of post baccalaureate experience in engineering field.

OR

Education: Associate's degree from an accredited institute of higher education with a major study in engineering or engineering technology.

Experience: Eighteen (18) months of experience in an engineering field at a level equivalent to a Civil Engineer I (or higher), plus two (2) additional years of experience in a position comparable to an Engineering Technician.

License/Certification:

  • Must possess an Engineer-in-Training Certificate issued by the NH Office of Professional Licensure and Certification. (Bachelor's degree applicants not possessing an E.I.T. Certificate may be hired at a one-salary grade reduction.)
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and/or have access to transportation for statewide travel.
  • The applicant's Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must meet the minimum standards as established by the hiring agency.

RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS: Knowledge of mathematics including trigonometry and its application to field surveying and engineering computations. Knowledge of the standard practices of CIVIL ENGINEERing as applied to design, construction and maintenance activities. Skill in the use of engineering instruments and testing laboratory equipment in field of office. Ability to perform precise survey work, make moderately difficult technical computations and estimates, reduce field notes and draw complex preliminary and final plans and compile engineering data and statistics. Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and specifications. Ability to organize the work of skilled and unskilled workers. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with officials, members of the public and other employees. Must be willing to maintain appearance appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency appointing authority.

CIVIL ENGINEER III:

Education: Master's degree from an accredited institute of higher education with a major study in engineering.

Experience: Two (2) years of post-baccalaureate experience in an engineering field.

OR

Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited institute of higher education with a major study in engineering.

Experience: Four (4) years of post-baccalaureate experience in an engineering field.

OR

Education: Associate's degree from an accredited institute of higher education with a major study in engineering or engineering technology field.

Experience: Four (4) years of experience in an engineering field at a level equivalent to Civil Engineer I (or higher) plus two (2) additional years of experience in a position comparable to an Engineering Technician.

License/Certification:

  • Must possess an Engineer-in-Training Certificate issues by the NH Office of Professional Licensure and Certification.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and/or have access to transportation for statewide travel.

Knowledge of modern methods and techniques related to the design, construction and maintenance of public works. Knowledge of engineering surveying and soils and materials engineering. Ability to perform all the mathematical computations required in engineering surveying and design operations. Ability to prepare, interpret and use CIVIL ENGINEERing plans, maps and specifications. Ability to plan and supervise the work of assistants. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, subordinates and contractor's employees. Must be willing to maintain appearance appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency appointing authority.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

Civil Engineer I:

Observes the inspection of construction materials to ensure compliance with material specifications.

Reviews and checks project records and documentation to determine quantities upon which payment to contractors is based.

Compiles information, performs basic design functions and computes quantities.

Reviews construction plans for compliance, evaluates proposed improvements and prepares design plans.

Observes bath plan operations, performing engineering material laboratory tests and reviewing mix designs.

Sets up and operates survey equipment, tabulates data and performs calculations.

Checks and performs calculations for highway and/or bridge design layout work and drainage.

CIVIL ENGINEER II:

Complies information, performs basic design, computes quantities and review highway plans.

Revies engineering plans to evaluate proposed improvements and ensure compliance with standards.

Communicates with other Bureaus to gather information for highway plans.

Assists in trainings subordinates to increase their technical knowledge and skills.

Monitors progress of work to meet established schedules.

CIVIL ENGINEER III:

Analyzes, designs and documents engineering tasks.

Supervises, trains and directs subordinates to achieve specific engineering goals.

Communicates and coordinates with individual and organizations to gather input for projects.

Drafts technical reports and correspondence for project development.

Instructs and supervises team members in the preparation of plans, specifications and estimates.
