Job description

Do you consider yourself to be particularly attuned to different social issues in your community? Are you the friend who knows exactly how all the layers of government work and the various ways you can navigate the public sector to create change? Are you passionate about everyone, even youth, having a strong understanding of civics so they too can shape their community? If you answered yes to any of those questions it clearly means that one of your superpowers is civics and Public Policy awareness and we are looking for you! At Super 7 Girls, we feel strongly about those things too! We believe that with consistent access to civics and Public Policy curriculum, we can help the girls in our program become informed, active citizens who are equipped with the necessary tools to make a difference in their community by acting as agents of change.
In this new summer role, you would work with a team of civics and Public Policy students to design new curriculum that would be utilized during the school year by the girls in our program. We need students who can help us revise our curriculum and our learning resources to ensure that our students have access to content necessary to help them develop new superpower skills. It will be a fun and robust summer experience where you will have an opportunity to learn from your peers, develop new skills, make new friends, and connect with the girls in our program by creating civics and Public Policy activities for them to engage in during their summer camp programming at Super 7 Girls. Your support over the summers means that, together, we can fulfill the mission of Super 7 Girls. Well, if your interest has been piqued, you may have stumbled upon an amazing internship opportunity that will be as rewarding as it impactful.
Super 7 Girls would not function without the help of Summer Interns. Given that we operate an intensive after school program during the school year, we use the summer to refine our programming as well as create new programming. Summer interns help us in this process and help us to do this more effectively. With that being said, we are still a young organization and we are still building our organizational capacity. We are working hard to build our organizational visibility so that we have the ability to help more girls have super powers. As we grow, we need people like you - civics and Public Policy gurus who can help ensure that we can have an even bigger impact on the girls in our program and the overall community. We need you. We need your brilliance, your drive, your expertise and your passion. It goes without saying that, your support in this role would help build the foundation we need to reach new programmatic heights. Excited?!? Well, go ahead and join our superpowered revolution already!
About Super 7 Girls
Super 7 Girls mission is simple - We help girls from under-resourced communities of color have superpowers (you read that right!). Now, when we talk about superpowers we don't mean that in the metaphysical sense. When we discuss superpowers we are discussing a certain mindset. By helping girls build various skill sets that they need, they will feel emboldened, confident, smarter and...yep, you got it...superpowered. They will know that there is nothing that they are unable to conquer and that no challenge is too great.
So, you must be curious?!? How does one go about giving superpowers? We know that superpowers grow from consistent access to curriculum that focuses on education, health, financial literacy, policy, arts, leadership development, and global engagement and this consistent access helps the girls have a deep understanding of how their increased knowledge means a stronger ability to take on life's challenges. We also know that their increased knowledge base disrupts the cycle of generational poverty and transforms the life outcomes and trajectories of the girls in our program. In essence, their superpowers enhance their overall well-being and helps them dream new dreams.
As you can see, we have big, hairy, audacious goals and we need bold volunteers to act as role models of this superpower mindset - visionary, courageous, confident, determined and reflective. Our environment is fast paced and dynamic and volunteers work hard. With that said, what makes our culture amazing is that everyone is willing to help with any task because we are all working towards the goal of helping these girls be amazing superpowered individuals.
Experience & Education

  • At least 2 years of college, college graduate, or graduate student
  • Background in social justice awareness, community organizing, Public Policy, advocacy or other related fields
  • Demonstrated leadership experience

Essential Duties, Responsibilities & Requirements
Curriculum Review and Identification
  • We are constantly assessing our set curriculum to ensure that it is still meeting the learning goals of our students. Interns help with the process by reviewing curriculum to ensure that it is still meeting the needs of our students.
  • While reviewing curriculum interns help identify additional supplemental resources like handouts, civics and Public Policy models, field trips or diagrams that might be helpful with student learning.
  • Interns help identify new civics and Public Policy curriculum that will complement our current curriculum offerings.

Curriculum Planning
  • We want to make it as easy as possible for people to volunteer with our organization. Given this desire, we try to ensure that each lesson that needs to be taught has the following: a lesson plan for each unit, class handouts/notes and homework.
  • Interns would review each lesson to make sure that the aforementioned documents have been completed and if something is missing, interns work with our team to help complete the necessary documents. Interns also help with the standardization of those documents as well.
  • Interns also help our team map out the lessons that need to be taught over the course of school year to make sure the bulk of our curriculum can be effectively delivered.

Assessments
  • Interns will help us create pre and post assessments for different civics and Public Policy curriculum we are using throughout the year
  • Interns will help create exit tickets for each lesson being taught.

Organizational Assistance
  • Help update teacher and students binders that contain material necessary for weekly classes
  • Interns print and make copies for all the binders

Special Projects
  • Help arrange field trip and experiential learning opportunities for next school year

Time Commitment
  • We would work to determine a work schedule that is mutually beneficial to both parties
  • At minimum, you will need 15-20 hours a week on site
  • Your commitment to this internship is critical to the girls involved in our program and our overall organizational goals

Compensation
  • This is an unpaid internship, but an awesome opportunity to leverage everything you've learned in school to change your community for the better!
  • If applicable, we are happy to help you receive credit for this internship with your college or internship.
