POSITION SUMMARY:
To be fully engaged in providing Quality/No Harm, Customer Service and Stewardship by serving as the day-to-day expert in atraumatic care for the pediatric patient. The Child Life Specialist is a professional in pediatric healthcare who works with children and families to help minimize stress/anxiety and maximize positive coping throughout the hospital stay. The Child Life Specialist focuses on the psychosocial development of children, provides emotional support and developmentally appropriate information to increase their understanding and coping with medical procedures, diagnosis, pain management, and bereavement. The Child Life Specialist will coordinate the efforts between providers, nursing staff, and parent/guardian to deliver superior atraumatic care. The Specialist also addresses the needs of siblings or other children affected by a child's illness/diagnosis. Utilizes play and self-expressive activities as primary resources to minimize the stress and anxiety patients and families can encounter in a hospital environment. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.
PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Engagement:
• Develops and maintains effective working relationships with Child Life peers and members of the healthcare team while supporting department changes as a result of performance initiatives
• Supports the day-to-day patient care/operations within the Pediatric Program and assists in program improvements founded in evidence-based practice
• Develops appropriate educational tools in collaboration with Education Specialists at Center for Learning
• Supports education and skills of interdisciplinary team to advocate/enhance atraumatic care and comfort techniques throughout pediatric program and serves as a resource to the care team
• Achieves results in relation to top decile performance for Emergency Department Pediatric care team
• Assists with coordination, involvement, and support for hospital-related community and special events
Quality/No Harm:
• Provides developmentally appropriate information for patients and their families related to medical procedures, diagnosis, parent education, bereavement, etc.
• Provides emotional support and utilizes stress reduction techniques to facilitate positive coping during procedures and throughout the healthcare experience
• Reviews outcomes and identifies process improvement opportunities
• Utilizes play as a primary resource with patients/siblings to enhance coping and promote opportunities for mastery/control and socialization
• Provides accurate and timely documentation
Stewardship:
• Utilizes LEAN principles to create an efficient, goal oriented, outcome driven program
• Maintains an organized and clean work space including playroom and storage
• Provides training and supervision for staff/volunteers and fosters positive working relationships
• Engages in ongoing program development activities
• Actively supports and identifies ideas for cost management strategies
Customer Experience:
• Aides in continuity of care by performing patient/sibling follow-up on case-by-case scenarios
• Assesses patient/siblings developmental levels, coping skills, and diversional needs while establishing therapeutic relationships
• Collaborates with physician and pediatric care team for promotion of atraumatic care as a standard
• Provides pediatric care team with approved and developmentally appropriate education materials for both patient and guardian to promote understanding of treatment plan, discharge plan, inpatient plan, and procedures
• Meets customer satisfaction outcomes based on Press Ganey criteria and benchmarks

Qualifications:
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
• Bachelor's degree in Child Life, Education, Recreation Therapy, Child Development, Psychology or related field is required
• Completion of a Child Life Internship under a Certified Child Life Specialist (CCLS) is required
• Must hold current AHA BLS Healthcare Provider Completion Card prior to start date and maintain certification(s) as required by specific unit
• Certified Child Life Specialist (CCLS) by the Association of Child Life Professionals is preferred
• At least 4 years of pediatric experience preferred
• Excellent communication and public speaking skills with demonstrated experience in patient, sibling/caregiver, and staff education
• Strong detail-orientation and follow-up capacity
• Excellent organizational skills
• Demonstrated success in relationship building
• Customer service focused
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
• Ability to sit/stand for long periods of time
• Ability to work flexible and/or long hours as required
• Must be able to bend and reach at all times
• Must be able to quickly adapt to change
• Must be able to carry a minimum of 20 lbs.
• Must have visual acuity/ near depth perception, visual acuity / far depth perception at all times
• Must be able to hear and speak clearly in a professional manner
