ABOUT PEACE FOR DC:

Peace For DC is committed to ending gun violence in DC by building up the community violence intervention workforce which forms the backbone of DC’s alternative system of public safety. We are focused on systems change to heal trauma, transform the lives of those at highest risk of violence, and build coordinated, evidence-based community-led strategies for peace in DC. We work with and for individuals and organizations who serve as the change agents best positioned to reduce community violence by reaching the individuals driving the violence. No other group in DC is focused on shifting power, mobilizing, and coordinating with DC’s community-based violence intervention heroes in this comprehensive way.

The DC Peace Academy is the flagship program of Peace For DC, launched in partnership with the community-based organizations on the frontlines of DC’s violence intervention efforts. The Academy provides advanced, hands-on training to improve the professional and personal development of DC’s community violence intervention workers. The students attend 14 weeks of classes, taught by DC’s rich network of local experts, learning skills like how to conduct mediations, how to practice cognitive behavioral theory to heal trauma, how to resolve conflicts, how to lead a restorative justice circle, how to be a life coach, and so much more.

Peace For DC is helping bring Roca’s Rewire Cognitive Behavioral Theory (CBT) program to DC. Roca’s highly successful model of CBT is a behavior change intervention for frontline violence intervention workers to use with young adults at the center of community violence. It is a research-based model grounded in brain science and the impact of trauma. This user-friendly model uses 7 simple skills to help participants interrupt unhealthy patterns of behavior. Ultimately we hope to teach all of DC’s frontline community violence intervention (CVI) workers how to practice Roca’s Rewire CBT, and encourage these Peacemakers to apply these skills in their work with the individuals and communities who are most impacted by violence and trauma.

Peace For DC also organizes events for the DC CVI field including Peace Nites and other opportunities for the DC CVI frontline workers and organization leadership to learn, heal and strategize together.

Peace For DC’s next program is Neighborhood Hubs for Life Transformation. This program- inspired by two successful programs in other cities: CRED and ROCA- is launched in partnership with the credible, trusted CVI organizations and workers who already have presence and relationships in these communities. And is focused on individuals at highest-risk of being involved in violence, in our most impacted neighborhoods.
