Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts (GSEMA) is currently seeking a Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO). Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the CHRO is responsible for developing and executing human resource (HR) and diversity, equity, inclusion and racial justice (DEI/RJ) strategy in support of the overall business plan and strategic direction of Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts (GSEMA/Council), specifically in the areas of talent management, organizational and performance management, training and development, compensation and benefits, employee relations, legal compliance and succession planning.

As a key member of the council’s senior leadership team, the CHRO participates in the process of setting the organization’s strategic direction, as well as short and long-term plans, and in translating the vision and corporate goals into effective operational strategies and actions. The CHRO provides strategic leadership by articulating HR and DEI/RJ needs and plans to the senior leadership team and board of directors.

This role is a hybrid work arrangement with work from home and GSEMA office base in Waltham; travel to other council offices or properties as needed.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead, mentor, direct, and support the work of the experienced HR team, promoting a culture of high performance and continuous improvement. Directly supervise two HR staff, including DEI/RJ staff.
  • Advise the CEO on HR opportunities, implications, and risks related to key issues and important strategic decisions, and on any matters related to employee morale, supervisory issues or other staff concerns.
  • Provide guidance and strategic direction for all dimensions of the business impacting the organization’s structure, staffing, employee engagement and experience, and employee relations.
  • Establish strong working relationships with the senior leadership team; ensure that HR and DEI/RJ issues of common concern are addressed in a timely, effective manner.
  • Foster a diverse, inclusive, and welcoming organizational culture across all levels of the Council. Champion the Council’s diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, activities and learning opportunities in collaboration with leadership and staff representatives.
  • Provide leadership and analysis that supports the Council’s workforce planning, job design, succession planning, and workforce management. Guide all change processes with strategic clarity, a collaborative spirit, and empathy.
  • Oversee development of comprehensive recruiting and retention plans to meet organizational needs. Collaborate closely with with HR and DEI/RJ team to implement diverse sourcing practices. Evaluate retention rates for any racial, ethnic and cultural variations. Create best practices to guarantee all employees have equal opportunity for advancement and development.
  • Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) for evaluating the performance of DEI/RJ initiatives.
  • Evaluate and implement a cost-effective comprehensive compensation model and attractive benefits plans.
  • Manage employment-related risks and ensure compliance with internal policies and employment laws and regulations. Respond to and investigate any employee relations issues or complaints; advise CEO on issues.
  • Stay abreast of policy development and best practices in the field; recommend new and/or updated HR policies to the CEO for approval, and as needed, by GSEMA’s Board of Directors.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration or related field; SHRM certification is a plus.
  • Minimum of ten years of progressive leadership experience in Human Resources and its functions.
  • Substantial knowledge and experience in organizational behavior, talent management and assessment, compensation and benefits, employee relations, and DEI/RJ initiatives and programs that create and support an inclusive workplace culture.
  • Exceptional judgment, supervisory, oral and written communication, interpersonal, and conflict management and resolution skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across diverse audiences and build relationships bother internally and externally; work collaboratively with management across the organization to further Council goals.
  • Solid knowledge of federal and state employment laws.
  • Committed to maintaining strict confidentiality.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite, HRIS systems, and technology to maximize efficient practices and deliver data.
  • Ability to effectively identify, analyze and solve practical problems and successfully manage a variety of variables and personalities; ability to adapt in a changing environment.
  • Capacity to, independently and as part of a team, plan, organize and prioritize work, while managing multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • The ideal candidate will be a strategist, collaborative manager, internal consultant and persuasive communicator.
