Chief Compliance Officer
The Chief Compliance Officer is responsible for the development, implementation and oversight of the Compliance function and all activities related to the organization's adherence to the laws, regulations and policies that govern its business. This job ensures that business practices, policies, and dealings of the company meet regulatory requirements to protect the organization from legal action. Leading the Compliance department, the Chief Compliance Officer manages Compliance teams and directs the organization's second line of defense. This job provides counsel to corporate management on regulatory strategies and risks and advises management on regulatory developments and changes that affect the company and ensures compliance with all related changes.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
  • Develops and oversees execution of corporate Compliance strategy to proactively mitigate regulatory exposure and to effectively coordinate and allocate the function's resources across the organization.
  • Leads the direction of the organization's Compliance operations, ensures that business practices, policies, and dealings of the organization meet regulatory requirements to minimize legal and regulatory risks.
  • Establishes, implements and monitors organization wide compliance and risk management programs concerning the adherence of all internal policies and procedures, including programs that govern quality assurance, employment training, conflicts of interest, privacy, reporting, and record retention.
  • Participates in the development of the company's long-term strategies and collaborates with senior leaders and applies knowledge of the businesses and market to identify long-term legal risks and opportunities for risk mitigation.
  • Prepares and conducts presentations to the Board of Directors regarding the organization's compliance program and communicating serious compliance matters with the board on an as needed basis.
  • Monitors compliance related developments and rule changes and advising executive management regarding their impact to the organization.
  • Oversees education and training to business units regarding their responsibilities with respect to the compliance program.
  • Manages performance of Compliance team through regular, timely feedback as well as the formal performance review process to ensure delivery of compliance objectives and engagement, motivation, and development of team.

The TIAA Wealth ("Wealth") Chief Compliance Officer ("CCO") is responsible for the development, implementation and oversight of the Compliance function and all activities related to the Wealth business' adherence to laws, regulations, and policies. The Wealth CCO will lead a team of compliance professionals to ensure that business practices, policies, and dealings of the Wealth business meet regulatory requirements to protect the organization from regulatory/legal action.
This job provides counsel to leadership on regulatory strategies and risks; advises management on regulatory developments; and ensures compliance with all related changes. Responsibilities also include serving as the CCO for TIAA-CREF Individual & Institutional Services, LLC, a broker-dealer that is dually registered as an investment adviser. This individual will supervise and work with the CCO of the investment adviser "Advice & Planning Services".
TIAA Wealth is comprised of TIAA retail and TIAA Trust businesses. Smaller businesses round out the Wealth organization and include 529 college savings programs and planned gift and endowment management services.
Required Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 10+ years of investment advisory, broker-dealer, and securities regulatory requirements and 5+ years of management experience.
  • Experience in a law firm, financial services company, or financial services consultancy firm as a compliance professional, attorney or regulatory officer (SEC, FINRA).
  • Robust knowledge of the Investment Advisers Act of 1940, FINRA and MSRB rules.
  • Series 7 and 24 certifications or must be obtained within the first six months after the start date.
  • Bachelor's Degree.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 15+ years of investment advisory, broker-dealer, and securities regulatory requirements, and 10+ years of management experience.
  • Strongly prefer current or recent experience as a Chief Compliance Officer for a broker-dealer and a Master's or JD.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with people at all levels.
  • Ability to think critically and find creative, practical solutions to achieve objectives.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including presentations and public speaking.
  • Ability to adapt to and initiate change.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional groups and support senior management.
  • A highly collaborative business partner who can effectively manage and influence relationships that are widely dispersed both functionally and geographically.

Base Pay Range: $292,500/yr. - $395,000/yr.
Actual base salary may vary based upon, but not limited to, relevant experience, time in role, base salary of internal peers, prior performance, business sector, and geographic location. In addition to base salary, the competitive compensation package may include, depending on the role, participation in an incentive program linked to performance (for example, annual discretionary incentive programs, non-annual sales incentive plans, or other non-annual incentive plans).
