Job Summary
This position will provide technical support to the instruction and research laboratory programs in the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department.
Key Responsibilities
- Under general supervision prepares, distributes, and disposes of all chemicals, laboratory supplies, and equipment required by assigned chemistry laboratory courses. Consults with chemistry faculty to coordinate Issue Room preparations with schedules of experiments. All safety and economic factors must be considered.
- Provides daily Issue Room support to the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department. This includes issuing and distributing chemicals, laboratory lockers and laboratory supplies to Chemistry students and faculty and other requesting departments (as outlined in our Chemical Chargeback program).
- Collects, labels and sorts of hazardous chemical waste generated by laboratories within the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department.
- Directly supervises the work of part-time student employees. Within the framework of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics Safety Program maintains a written safety training program on safe chemical handling and safe laboratory procedures for the student employees. Employee must be familiar with Material Safety Data Sheets and rules surrounding the usage of their respirator.
- Assists supervisor in maintaining chemical and laboratory supply inventories. This includes making chemical and laboratory supply purchase recommendations. Covers the duties of other Issue Room personnel during periods of illness and vacation.
- Assists in minor repairs and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Must be able to communicate with students and faculty in a clear and professional manner. Employee has extensive contact with people when issuing items from the dispensing window. Must be able to perform mentally demanding work that is amid constant interruption and distractions. This requires good organizational skills, the ability to set priorities and the ability to work independently. Employee is constantly interrupted by people coming to the issue window for chemicals/lab supplies.
Must be able to perform physically demanding work which includes lifting approximately 25lbs. and standing for most of the working day on concrete floors. Standing is necessary when servicing students the issue window and when mixing and pouring chemicals. Lifting of chemicals and lab supplies is required when transporting items from other storerooms to the main Issue Room. Must be able to use a personal computer. The student laboratory breakage bills, student laboratory locker combinations and chemical and laboratory supply inventories are on the computer. Employee assists in entering/editing information in these files/databases.

Education and Experience
Equivalent to three years of experience providing instructional support services for a related unit or discipline, or in producing materials or supplies or repairing equipment related to the discipline required. A bachelor's degree in chemistry or Biochemistry is preferred for this position.
Physical Summary
Medium work - Job involves lifting heavy-weight objects (20-40 pounds) and/or 20% - 40% of the job involves standing, squatting, kneeling, or walking. May require pushing or pulling objects within the weight limits.

Compensation
Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.
Hiring Range: $2,090 - $2,475 per month commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training.
CSU Classification Salary Range: $2,090 - $3,627 per month.

Time Base
Half-time, 20 hours per week (0.50 FTE). Additional hours may be required based on operational needs.
Duration of Appointment
This is a temporary position for one year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.
