Job description

SUMMARY OF JOB:

A Medical Assistant is responsible for assisting the physician with the testing, treatment and care of ENT patients in a clinical setting.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Obtains an accurate medical history, chief complaint, family history, current patient illness, medications, allergy and drug reaction information from patients.
  • Takes vital signs of patient (temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respiration) and accurately enters the information into the patient’s record.
  • Is knowledgeable of and efficiently operates the Company’s electronic medical records system without error.
  • Assists physicians with procedures and office surgeries.
  • Is able to accurately order medications via e-prescribing as directed by the physician.
  • Clearly explains insurance coverage and information regarding treatments, medications, and surgery to patients.
  • Is responsible for providing patients with educational pamphlets that provide them with medical facts about their diagnosis. Maintains adequate supplies of these pamphlets.
  • Monitors exam rooms and ensures that they are clean, organized, stocked and all equipment is in working order.
  • Is responsible for cleaning and properly sterilizing all instruments.
  • Administers medications and gives injections as directed by the physician.
  • Schedules surgeries and medical work-ups for patients. Ensures that all documentation is correct.
  • Is familiar with and can differentiate CPT codes and procedures used by physicians.
  • Employs professional communication skills when conversing with patients, physicians and the public.
  • Escorts patients to treatment rooms, x-ray, audiology, allergy, insurance or other departments. Transports and transfers patients in wheelchairs.
  • Obtains and inputs allergy information into the electronic medical records system for patients as required for testing, referral and surgery.
  • Understands and is able to explain allergy testing to patients and is able to clearly relate the results of the tests to patients.
  • Schedules physician’s appointments and surgeries and maintains these schedules and updates them as needed.
  • Completes charge tickets and other tasks for the physician.
  • Is responsible for knowing the work schedule, observing work hours and maintaining a good attendance record. (See attached attendance and punctuality requirements.)
  • Attends in-service programs.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with patients, employees, supervisors and the public. Exemplifies the Company’s Five Star Program.
  • Follows all corporate and departmental policies and procedures and complies with the Employee Handbook.
  • Performs other tasks as needed or directed.

DEGREE OF SUPERVISION:

Performs duties under direct and indirect supervision.

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Accountability: Reports directly to the physician, the ENT Clinical Coordinator, Head Nurse, LPN or Medical Assistant Supervisor.
  • Education or Training: Graduation from a licensed school for Medical Assistants is preferred.
  • Knowledge and Experience: 1 year of work experience is preferred.
  • Dexterity: Must have good manual dexterity for examining patients and operating equipment. Must be able to function in an office setting.
  • Accuracy: Must be able to transcribe information received from patients, including insurance coverage, social security and telephone numbers without error.
  • Physical Activity: Physical activity involves writing, keying, reaching, carrying, looking, listening, talking, bending, lifting, sitting and much standing and walking resulting in medium work.
  • Exertion Requirements: Medium - must be able to exert force to lift and carry from 20 to 50 pounds up to 10 feet occasionally, from 10 to 15 pounds of force up to10 feet frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Must be able to sit, stand and walk to a significant degree depending on task requirements.
  • Working Conditions: Works in an office setting, which is well lighted, ventilated and temperature regulated. Automobile travel may be required.
  • Must be able to concentrate on work tasks amidst distractions, such as noise, conversations and foot traffic.
  • Must be able to work in a confined area performing repetitive work for extended periods of time.
  • Hazards or Risks: May be exposed to infectious disease.
  • Worker Characteristics: Must have responsible, ethical and professional manner with the ability to listen, learn, plan and organize. Must be able to communicate effectively with people of different races, sexes, ages and social classes.
  • Non-performance Requirements: Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • This position may require driving between clinic location, reliable transportation is required.
