The Housing Counselor will provide direct counseling to clients seeking assistance in all aspects of home buying and home ownership. The role involves guiding clients through budgeting, pre-purchase, post-purchase, mortgage default, foreclosure prevention, credit counseling, and down payment assistance, supporting mission and vision of providing affordable housing opportunities.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide counseling services to individuals and families
- Facilitate group education workshops.
- Provide monthly, quarterly, and year-end data for reporting.
- Represent the program at roundtable or networking/partnership meetings/trainings, including housing fairs, to promote the organization’s Comprehensive Housing Counseling Services.
- Keep detailed records of all communications, update logs after each meeting or interaction with homeowners, etc.
- Follow and enforce the National Industry Standards for Homeownership Education and Counseling National Industry Code of Ethics and Conduct for Homeownership Professionals
- Participate in staff, and counselor meetings and training as scheduled.
- Take incoming phone calls during the week regarding the program
- Assist with conducting assessments and developing plans
- Utilize motivational interviewing techniques to support clients in achieving their goals
- Assist clients in accessing community resources and services
- Stay up-to-date on Fair Housing regulations and ensure compliance in all interactions with clients
- Assist clients in navigating the housing program database
Skills:
- 1 years of recent experience in one-on-one comprehensive housing counseling (mortgage default/foreclosure prevention, budget, credit, pre-purchase, home mortgage pre-qualification, post-purchase counseling, and homebuyer education).
-Must have passed the HUD Housing Counseling exam and be able to provide proof.
- Must be able to demonstrate an understanding of mortgages, loan modifications, consumer credit, foreclosures, bankruptcies, etc.
- Proficiency in MS Word and Excel
-Excellent customer service and organization skills.
- Ability to manage and prioritize different tasks.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills are a must.
- Ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds
-Ability to work in a team environment.
- Willing to travel for work events.
- Knowledge of local down payment assistance programs is a plus.
- Must be able to sit and stand for extended periods, type, grasp, write, and speak clearly
- Comfortable with individual, small group, and large group facilitation.
- Strong knowledge of Fair Housing regulations and their application in counseling settings
- Familiarity with the housing program and its requirements
- Understanding of relevant laws related to counseling and housing services
