Summary
The IAVS Student Project Center provides maker space for hands-on, collaborative learning that allows students to design, build, and test their creations. This work space empowers students to enhance their understanding of engineering theory and apply their knowledge in a practical setting.
The IAVS Student Project Center Technician (Technician) will be responsible for overseeing the use of this student makerspace, enforcing best practices in industrial and research operations for safety, effectively deploying resources, and, as necessary, training of participating students and Student Project teams. The Technician will play a valuable role in mentoring students (and facilitating the mentorship by others) especially as part of competition teams, project teams, etc. Because of the high use of this facility and the need for coordination among the users CECS is seeking an experienced individual to manage the evening activities.
Responsibilities*
Principal Duties and Responsibilities of this position are to:
- Oversee evening activities
- Support installation and maintenance of CECS equipment
- Mentor/coach students in relevant best practices
- Support CECS events
- Student competition scheduling
- Handle procurement for student competition teams and MSEL
- Provide technical service and expertise to support CECS teaching and research activities
- As part of a team, conduct training opportunities for fabrication techniques (e.g. machining, welding, woodwork, composites, electronics, etc.) and other short courses (e.g. CAD) necessary and useful to our students
- Manage the use of the IAVS high-bay
- Enforce best practices in laboratory safety
- Maintain the tools and equipment
- Conduct other special projects as assigned.
Required Qualifications*
Experience working in a comparable facility (e.g. instructional lab, research lab, machine shop, fabrication lab) is necessary, as is actual light fabrication experience, including working with wood, pvc and simple electronics. Successful adherence with safety regulations is required.
Strong organizational skills; excellent communication skills (both written and spoken); ability to effectively manage/coordinate the activities of others are all necessary; flexible schedule for some evening hours. Ability to work with a wide range of individuals, including students, is necessary.
Desired Qualifications*
Five years or equivalent professional experience and Experience with OSHA/OSEH requirements are highly desired.
Work Schedule
This position requires a non-standard evening schedule. Specific hours are variable and negotiable and will be determined upon hire. Please note that there are also shift premiums for evenings and weekends as applicable.
