Job description

Report To: Catering Manager or Restaurant MOD

Job Summary: The Catering Team Member works as a member of the catering staff for catering events, banquets, weddings, concessions, and other events. The Catering Team member is responsible for assisting in the layout of catering venues, setting patron tables, food stations, banquet lines, accommodating guests, service and replenishing of food and beverages, removal of dirty dishes and other items, removal of equipment from venue, and cleaning, return and organization of all equipment in storage.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities: 

  • Promote, work, and act in a manner consistent with the core values and mission of Phil’s BBQ (“PHILS”).
  • Greet and welcome guests and respond to specific requests in a courteous and friendly manner.
  • Ensure exemplary customer service whether assigned at serving stations, buffet lines, bartending, running food during events, try passing appetizers, or serving plated meals in compliance with event standards (“Phil’s Way”).
  • Ensure events are properly equipped and executed by requisitioning appropriate equipment, transporting, setting up, breaking down, cleaning and returning equipment to designated storage areas in compliance with event standards and instructions.
  • Maintain clean and organized dining and serving areas to facilitate workflows and minimize safety hazards.
  • Perform side work as needed by helping to provide a safe and clean work environment.
  • Understand and comply with all health and food safety requirements and regulations as well as environmental laws by following established procedures, policies, training, and other activities.
  • Properly load, unload and operate a catering truck, including refueling trucks and supplies as necessary.
  • Ability to perform organizational duties, configuring event setups, placement of tables, chairs, serving areas, buffet lines, food and beverage stations, and grill-on-site areas.
  • Follow industry standard procedures and etiquette when carrying out duties such as beverage service, plating, tray passing, cake cutting, beverage service, etc.
  • Obtain knowledge of menu items and portion size and explain to guests as necessary.
  • Ensure that food waste is minimized.
  • Assist other staff with delivery of food orders and retrieval of required food items and supplies.
  • Become trained to make deliveries of catering orders (if eligible).
  • Operate dishwasher (as needed), wash items by hand (as needed) in a 3-compartment sink, as well as organize and maintain dish storage and small wares.
  • Serve beverages and foods in designated order and quickly remove dishes at end of each meal, and replenish beverages and check with guests to ensure satisfaction.
  • Maintain attention to every detail and be able to create pleasant and exciting ambiance for events.
  • Maintain a professional well-groomed and clean appearance.
  • Present checks to guests and collect payment for services.
  • Present final event summary, timesheets and payment documentation to catering office for further processing upon completion of event.
  • Record, report and declare any cash or credit card tips for all events.

  • Point of Sale applications (MICROS, Reserve Cloud, POYNT)
  • Personal Computers (Microsoft Word, Outlook)
  • Driving Direction Applications: Google Maps or MapQuest
  • Commercial use of dishwasher, 3 partition sink, glassware, ice machines, cutlery, tools, chaffing dish, Sterno®
  • Commercial use of mobile warming and refrigeration units, Cambro units, wood-burning grills,
  • Cloud-based employee schedule accounts
  • iSolved employee self-service accounts
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as needed

Minimum Qualifications & Physical Requirements:

  • Able to work in a walking or standing position for long periods of time (up to 8 hours).
  • Able to remain in a seated position when traveling in a vehicle for long period of time (up to 3 hours one way).
  • Ability to speak, hear, read, write and understand the English language.
  • Ability to see 20/20 with or without correction.
  • Ability to hear with 100% accuracy with or without correction.
  • Able to occasionally lift from 5-25 pounds.
  • Able to frequently reach, bend, kneel, twist, stoop, crouch, climb, push, pull and grasp objects.
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Possess valid CA Food Handler Card (will certify if lacking).
  • ServSafe Certification not required, but a plus.
  • Must be 21 years of age if bartending and possess RABS/LEAD (will certify if lacking).
  • Sexual harassment prevention training (will certify on the job).
  • Valid state driver’s license (if driving) and satisfactorily pass DMV EPN driving record check.
  • Ability to work cohesively and effectively with others on a team.
