Summary
The Maintenance Specialist - Carpentry performs skilled carpentry duties necessary to construct, repair, and maintain various assets, structures, and equipment throughout Park District facilities and parks.
Typical work week is 7:30am to 4:00pm Monday through Friday. However, work week hours may vary according to weather or seasonal demand. Some overtime hours during peak season are required.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent, Associate's Degree or trade school certificate preferred, in Construction Management or related field.
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience in carpentry.
- Ability to understand and work from written and oral instructions.
- Ability to observe, receive, and otherwise obtain information from all relevant sources.
- Demonstrated ability to use and maintain vehicles, power equipment, and hand tools efficiently and effectively.
- Demonstrated ability to make decisions and problem solve.
- Demonstrated knowledge of building and construction.
- Knowledge of design techniques.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Valid class C driver's license with clean driving record.
- Demonstrated ability to organize, budget, plan, and implement projects with multiple deadlines.
Supervision
The Maintenance Specialist - Carpentry is directly responsible to the Maintenance Supervisor. The Maintenance Specialist - Carpentry may supervise seasonal and part-time staff.

Essential Functions
- Follow all Champaign Park District safety policies and perform all work in a manner that ensures the safety of oneself, the public, fellow employees.
- Demonstrate a high level of professionalism and discretion in all interactions, including maintaining strict confidentiality regarding staff information, communications from supervisors, and conversations with parents or patrons. Uphold the Park District's policies and standards for data privacy and confidentiality at all times.
- Attend required training and meetings.
- Operate and maintain all tools, equipment, and vehicles in a safe and efficient manner to ensure safety for staff and patrons.
- Hang various signage, art work, pictures, bulletin boards, etc.
- Install, repair, and maintain door and gate locks throughout the Park District.
- Perform painting duties when needed.
- Ability to repair plaster and drywall.
- Monitor status, perform, and complete carpentry work on District facilities and equipment.
- Plan and coordinate daily workload so that appropriate supplies and tools are available in the most efficient manner.
- Interact with the public in a positive manner.
- Act as the team leader on assigned projects.
- Inspect facilities, equipment, vehicles and grounds and report conditions to the Maintenance Supervisor.
- Become familiar with District ordinances and inform supervisor of violations witnessed.
- Estimate sizes, distances, and quantities and determine time, costs, resources, or materials needed to perform a work activity.
- Study specifications in blueprints, sketches or plans to prepare project layout and determine dimensions and materials required.
- Shape or cut materials to specified measurements, using hand tools, machines, or power saw.
- Install, build or repair structures and fixtures using woodworking machines, carpenter's hand tools, and power tools.
- Inspect equipment, structures, and materials.
- Clean and maintain shop spaces, storage rooms, mechanical rooms, etc.
- Manage and maintain various fountain features throughout the district as well as the pond at the Children's Prairie Farm.

Physiological Considerations
The activities required to fulfill the duties of this position are significantly physical in nature.
These activities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Kneeling
- To install or repair tile, install or repair carpet, general plumbing and electrical work.
- Lifting
- Manipulation of lumber and drywall, moving roofing materials, moving bags of concrete, manipulating pipe and toilet fixtures, handling 150 lb. cylinders and 700 lb. drums, with hand carts, lifting and holding in place vehicle repair parts. Up to 50 lbs. alone and over 50 lbs. with assistance, if needed.
- Handwork
- Shovel work, use of a wide range of hand tools such as hammers, pliers, cutting tools, saws, drills, pipe threaders; all requiring gripping and controlling motions that are often repetition.

- Working from ladders, mount aerial truck, tractors and other equipment.
- Push/Pull
- Concrete installation and finishing, pull wire through conduit, raking playgrounds surfacing, moving equipment, installing implements to tractors. Other duties as required.
- Laying
- Vehicle service, crawl space and attic work, installing repair to buried plumbing and electrical.
- Standing
- Painting, carpentry, various carpentry, electrical and plumbing work, all may be for extended periods of time, many other duties.
- Sitting
- While operating equipment and vehicles over rough terrain for extended periods of time.
- Equipment Operation
- Mount/Dismount and operate (hands and feet) tractors, loaders, backhoe, mower tractors, aerial truck, dump truck, other vehicles, engage and disengage implements and trailers, and a wide variety of power hand tools.

Environmental Considerations
- Work activities, including the physiological considerations, may occur in outside weather conditions including extremes of heat, cold, wet, and dry and may also occur on rough or inclined terrain. Exposure is likely to airborne pollens, dusts, or molds. Any one of these endeavors may occur for an entire workday or for several workdays in a row.
